    My 72 cj5 with a 304 has some letters on the rear passenger side of block with stars or dots in a line next to them like this

    S + + + + +
    H + + + + + + +

    On the other side is a

    Does anyone know what this all means, I have not seen anything that describes the purpose or meaning

    FYI Engine build date is 22 August 1971

    That is in the range for a 1972 model. No idea what the casting marks mean - you might ask on an AMC forum.
