Stratton Lift Registry

Now that I am putting the stratton 3 point hitch on my '56 CJ5, Seth aka @windyhill said I am the stratton three point hitch guy. I want to start a thread documenting these hitches. On the control valve, there is a data plate with a number which is the serial number I am assuming. The stratton lift I have came on a '63 CJ5. I'll post the numbers up of this jeep tomorrow once I get my hitch serial number.

I will be interested to see how your project comes along. While doing research for an article in the Dispatcher, I spent part of a day at the Cleveland Library researching the Stratton Equipment Company and its founder. I also did searches at the Cleveland research institutes. Found very little information. I'm trying to determine when (and how) the Stratton became the "Jeep Approved" lift, replacing the Monroe.

I know a couple of Stratton owners who may not be members here. I'll try and drop them a note pointing to this thread.

 

I haven’t found much information either about Stratton. All the pictures I have of them are on jeeps that had all the parts welded to the frame. Trying to determine how it all went originally is difficult. My guess is the change occurred sometime in the cj5 era. All the pictures I have are of cj5s.

The other jeeps info would be much appreciated.

 

I believe that Monroe stopped the lift production around 1956. I have a theory, but no proof, that Jeep approached Stratton about replacing the Monroe lift with a design that would free the bed. The patent application reads like it was written by Jeep and I am sure they were looking for a supplier. Stratton build "refuge" (aka garbage truck) hydraulic systems and material handling lifts starting in the late 1940s. They build a tailgate lift for the FC, so would have been know to Jeep. Hoping to write an article someday if I can uncover more information.

 

I’m having Dave on eWillys start a post about this too, so maybe I’ll get some more information about it.

Here are the pics I was sent by Bob. It has the same pump as the 4 cyl jeeps, but instead of being directly coupled to the crank shaft, it is belt driven. The hydraulic oil tank looks the same, but is in a completely different location. The jeep also has 3.73 axle gears, which I find strange.

Stratton added a second "power pack" when the V6 was introduced. The difference was in how the pump mounted (now we know it was belt driven). Hope to find more details soon.
