Let's say a buddy got a bit overzealous and impatient while spray painting a part of his Jeep and didn't take the 2 seconds to throw a rag over some recently recovered seats.

Any ideas for how this buddy would go about getting some overspray off the vinyl? Paint thinner didn't work (he told me).

Hmmm... there is a product much like modeling clay that is used to remove oxidation, overspray, etc. from painted surfaces. I can't recall what it is called, but I think it's made by Mother's... maybe if you loosen the overspray with some thinner, then rub it with this clay... :?
HTH, good luck to your buddy...

I wonder if you could use some extra, extra fine sandpaper with a cleaner of some sort? Did I say you, I meant your buddy. ;)

That is a compounding clay I think. It is like an ultra fine sand. Not sure about vinyl.

Paint thinner didn't work? Lacquer thinner is powerful stuff test on a hidden spot first for discoloration.

Tell your friend to consult you first! :D

laquer thinner, tell your friend not to rub very long or very hard or your friend will have ask us where and what kind of upholstery die they should get to restore the color. I only know this because a friend told me about what he had to do to get overspray off his seats, you understand.

The PRE surface prep spary that Eastwood sells will get it off, it took it off my polycarbonate lens in my glases and didn't damage the lens. it is similar to laquer thinner but seems to work better.

Tha...uhhh..my buddy thanks you for your replies.

Just for the record, what (he said) doesn't work:

    -paint thinner
    -tackcloth and soapy water
    - steel wool and soapy water

    What did work:
-leftover POR Solvent (whatever it is, bottle doesn't say. He said.).

Go to Home Depot and get one of the grafitti removers. The one I keep on my bench is called "M-1 Remover" and it's safe for most plastics. Very handy stuff - removes tape residue, chewing gum, all sorts of things.

Oh - too late. POR solvent could be xylene or toluene or ???

    Goof Off?

Used that to remove lots of paint and tape residue type stuff too.

Allthough I do see that Mike's friend got it off. Might be helpful in the future? ;)

I had Goof-Off before this can and it worked well. Went to Home Depot and M-1 is what they had. Similar product. Very handy - removes Sharpie marks, adhesive labels, cleans spray paint nozzles, all sorts of things.

I expect that any chlorinated solvent would get a thumbs-down from OSHA. Due caution, but it's sittin' on the shelf at Home Depot...
