I think I got one that kinda looks like that. HOWEVER! first you have to figure out why the other one released the cloud of smoke. I am guessing that the wire to the sender shorted out. Wait a sec, that can't be it as it would have read "full" Okay, then maybe the regulator inside the gauge shorted to full on, and then the resistor in the gas tank shorted out, and then the gauge released it's cloud of smoke.

Sorry about the gloomy story.... -Hill

I'm in the same boat. I'm pretty sure my guage and sender are toast too. I checked the resistances against what they are supposed to be and almost nothing came out right.

    Fuel guages are over-rated.

Randy, you need to check the grounding of the gauges and the speedo case. If you lose the ground you lose the constant voltage regulation (CVR). When properly grounded the gauges get about 5V DC. Ungrounded they get a full 12V+ and will smoke. See my page on this at:

Thanks Stan, good info. that sounds like my problem, unfortunately it does not tell how the cases are supposed to be grounded. i am guessing it is inside the case... :?

They are *suppose* to ground via the case. But we know that doesn't always happen....

Does anyone run an extra ground wire just for the guages....just to be safe?

I finally gave up on the original setup and just got a gauge and "universal" sending unit at NAPA. Had to find a place to mount another gauge but other than that it was no problem. Wasn't too much $ and reasonably good quality.
    Just an option.
