I am doing a frame up resto on my 71 CJ5. I am thinking of a small body lift, say 1"-2" in polyurethane. What is the difference with the mounts between 71 thru 76? It seems the 71 mounts are very thin, one piece. Can I use the newer mounts?
    Thanks.

The poly body mounts I got for my Jeep were about 3/4 inch thick, I wanted more (about 1 1/2 inch) could not find any kits out there. I think the problem in raising the body up is the clutch and brake pedals, if the body goes up the holes don't line up. Since I'm doing a frame up and lot's of body work I'm going to relocate the pedal holes. I cut custom body mounts out of 2 inch nylon round stock I got at Small Parts INC. www.smallparts.com , I got a 2 ft piece for $30.55 plus shipping (plus they have all kinds of neet stuff!!). I can custom cut mounts to my specifications, if the solid mount seems too solid you can stack rubber/poly with the nylon to get what you want. I used my band saw for length and drill press for the hole. Nylon is easy to work with, but it only comes in white. I'm going to experiment with dyes to see if I can change the color.

Acetal (Delrin) will have similar properties to nylon and comes in black. I'd guess it'll be cheaper too.

1"-2" is gonna play havoc with the frame mounted pedals, the poly mounts are about 3/4" thick. You're gas tank filler hose's are gonna be to short and will need spacers to connect up.
I hope you're not putting this on in place of a true suspension lift, body lifts are ok but they do create unepected problems like the above mentioned.

I already have a 2" suspension lift with 31" tires. The clutch is converted to hydraulic and the brakes are from a '76 with disc on the front. The gas tank is in the rear with lots of room for the hose. 1" is about all I really want.
I would still like to know what the difference is between a '71 and a '76 body mounts. Is there more places for the mounts or just designed different? Can I use the mounts from a '76 on the '71?
Thanks for all the replys they are great! I always need more info...

I have also wondered what the difference is between the mounts. Is the number of mounts different for a 1976? If there are the same number of body mounts, then are the tubs different causing the body mounts to be longer or shorter in certain locations?

I don't know for sure but I can tell you the 76 model was the bastard AMC unit, as it shared some things with the intermediates and then some things from the 77-83 series. There are probably more body mounts than our have.

i can tell you that on my 70 i used a 2" poly lift from a 76 (got it for free i think) the only difference i noticed is that with the 76 kit i had one more mount left over cause there is no mount where my under seat tank goes. other than that they were the same size. i had two sizes in my kit and it matched the one for the 70. since you have a rear tank i think you would be fine using either kit. i will tell you that i wish i had used a smaller lift there was alot of modifications involved with the pedals and such..good luck
