I have removed the screws holding the distributor to the crankcase and have tried removing it by hand without luck. What types of persuasion should be used or am I missing something?

Look uderneath the dist. body ,ther should be an oil fitting on the shaft(an oil hole with a cap on it), sometimes this gets wedged against the block.Turn the shaft clockwise a little, you won't be able to turn it much because the bottom of the shaft lines up with a slot in the oil pump driveshaft. But it should "wiggle out"

If the hold down bolts are out it should turn some. Sounds like penetrating oil time.

The oil fitting isn’t wedged against the block, I can get the spacer between the distributor and block to move, but the distributor isn’t moving at all. I sprayed it down with PB Blaster and I will see what happens in awhile.

Don't use vise grips on the shaft. Let the blaster work... trust me on this one!

I hear ya Kelly, that is why I asked what types of persuasion should be used in my first post.

After letting it soak overnight in PB Blaster and tapping under the distributor with a hammer it came out. It just didn't want to come out without a little persuasion.
