Is there a nice Drum to Disk brake conversion out there for a ECJ5?

I have look at several sites I know of, and through several aftermarket magazines, to no avail.

Any help would be nice. What set up are most of you using if this is your situation? What will fit in other words.

There are none sold as a kit but it can be done with Chevy 1/2 ton truck calipers and such or Jeep factory parts, if you do a search here you'll find alot of info. You can also search the JP magazine website for a write up and pictures of this process.

4 Wheel Parts Hardware is now offering a kit for ECJ5's. If you are crazy enough to spend $1,000 to do the conversion.

A friend of me here in Greece had convert the 4 drum brakes with discs from suzuki samurai. The bolt pattern for the rims is the same with low cost and not a lot of conversions. If you want i can give details for the conversion.

Mmm... Dana 30. You can easily get a fully set-up D30 for the $1000 kit price, and have a better axle in the bargain. Methinks spending a lot on a D25/D27 is, uh, uneconomic unless you've got the skill, time and knowledge to mercilessly scrounge the parts.

The 11" drum conversion can be done really cheap, so maybe that's cost-effective for a D25/D27.

    JMHO.

There was a kit on the market, bought one few years back. Company in New Egypt NJ. Used CJ rotor and GM intermediate calipers. For the 25/27. If I can find the instruction sheet that came with it I'll post an address. IIRC it was something like "no excuses Jeep parts" or something like that.

The drum-to-disc conversion on the D25/D27 can be done for about $300 with all-new parts, and the only thing that keeps me from calling it a straight bolt-on is the grinding of the knuckles for caliper clearance.

I was a little daunted by the idea of scrounging for parts, but in reality my scrounging only went as far as the caliper mounts. The rest I bought at my FLAPS.

If you call Mike Kirkus at www.completeoffroad.com he offered to give ECJ5 members a slight discount on the caliper mounts... ;)

It want be easy for me to do but i'll try.

You have to find the disc brake caliper, caliper dust shields and the mounting brackets from samurai.
You can also use the parts from sidecick.

First you have to fit the disc to the hub.
If you use the disc from samurai you will have to torn the hub to fit
the middle hole of the disc that the hub goes in. NOT to much just to fit the disc.
If you use discs from sidecick you don't have to do this step, and they are a litlle bigger than samurai
But in both options you have to fit the disc to the hub in order to turn straight.

Because the mounting brackets of samurai is not the same according what we need
you have to make your own brackets.
But they will help you to find out where you have to drill the holes to fit in the spindle and bolt the caliper.
The new brackets will be almost the same as samurai.
This bracket must be 15mm thick.

The new brackets you will fabricate is going to have 6 holes for the bolts to bolt to the spindle,
instead of 4 that samurai uses ,
and both to the knuckle. So the order is knuckle - spindle - mounting bracket.
Because there is no measurments for the thickness of the bracket you can start with 15mm
and see how much you have to torn from the bracket so the disc want hit the caliper and
be in the middle of the caliper (brake pads).

For brake hoses you can use samurai, they fit, or make new one.

For the caliper dust shields you have to make spacers and weld them according to what you had done,
and i mean where you have place the caliper (front of the knuckle, back, top)

Of course you know that you need power brakes so you can stop with the discs
otherwise it's going to be even more difficult to stop than stock.

If i have forgotten anything or you don't understand anything say so for further information.
