I don't think there is any question as to whether or not your jeep had the column shift to begin with.

    It did.

The transmission has been swapped by necessity when the V-6 was swapped into the jeep, and the trans you now have was never a column shift.

The t-90 OEM was the column shift version. The T-86 (most likely) that you now have was not manufactured in the column shift version except in the 2WD applications.

If you have a T-14, it would have been floor shift from the get-go. I doubt that you have the T-14, but it is possible....

The V-6 jeep used either the T-86 or t-14 transmission.

The T-90 input shaft doesn't work with the V-6.

The reason you change the T90 4cyl input shaft for a V6 conversion is length only; you use the T90 230 OHC shaft, which is longer.
    it does work with a V6 ;)

All that info is real nice but I do have the T90A-1.Every thing on my Tux seems to be original other than the Buick Special and she's even a 64.

I'll tell you what you probably have. The 6 cylinder wagons and trucks used a T-90 A-1 with holes drilled and tapped in the 2 raised areas in question, and a bracket was bolted on there for the mounting of the ball that the clutch pivot tube rotated on. The one in my wagon is like this, and I have a complete spare 226 with bellhousing, tranny and t-case with the same setup. My 2 CJs also have the raised area, but no holes in either. All 4 are T90 A-1s. The 6 cylinder transmission has the longer input shaft as mentioned, so a likely scenario is that a wagon/truck transmission was used.

That would suck.I hopeing my 225 was swopped in at the dealership and every thing else was/is original(64 Tux/64 225).Is there a way to make a possitive identifiction on tha T90?Even a year on the trans would be a quick rule out.I've have everything in motion to obtain the parts I will need if I have the converted T90.

If you're lucky, it'll have a tag under one of the cover bolts. Most of them are gone though.

Well, like I said in an earlier post the side shift would have 2 holes that go through the side of the transmission for the shift levers. They wouldn't be threaded either. I know it sucks to find out you don't have what you thought you have. But you can still have a nice Jeep.

The holes look to have stainless fittings in them.Does this sound like a truck/wagon T90?Does anyone have pics of a side shift and/or truck/wagon T90 with the holes in question? All of this makes me want to roll her over the hill!!!!

We might be able to get you some pics. Peter converted our Tux from column to floor a long time ago because of jamming.

It may be next week, but we have a number of different transmissions and can probably post some pics and explain better.

They used up T98 tranny housings on the first T18's. Makes you wonder if they used T90 housings for T86's. Willys pickups w/ the L and F head engines did come remote shift early on. Sounds like your PO did an input shaft change for the 225 V6. Either way you will need the modifications he did to the tranny to make the hookup to the V6 work.

Can you take the top off of you transmission/ i.e. the shifter? Then you can see if the holes go all the way through and that'll clear up any questions. In the service manual the side shift and column shift tranny look the same on the side other than the obvious holes or lack of holes. One thing I did notice is there is a retaining pin for each shifter which appears to go through a hole in the the offset and into a groove in the shift rod to allow it to rotate but not pull out. You might check for those, they would be vertical according to the picture.

Your description sounds like you do have the column shift tranny. You'll of course be able to tell better when it's not dark but there wouldn't be anything like you describe in a regular one. It's total disassembly time for the tranny, count on the bearings being toast and you'll have to inspect the gears after you clean them. They'll most likely be pitted. Let us know what you find.

can't get my tranny to come out!!!!Do I need to unbolt the adapter?Mind you I'm doing this myself with a jack (trolly 2 ton) on gravel uneven terain!!!!The adapter has a bolt comeing out to hook up the T case shifter.I don't know how original this setup is cause someone had to notch the bellhouseing to clear the shifter.I was thinking this may have been done at the dealership being a 64 225/64 Tux.The adapter says OFFY.
