Well, just picked up a dana 44 for my jeep. It just so happen to come with a
limited slip carrier (score!!). Unfortunately, it is only a Trac-Loc but it better than nothin'. Anyways, I know you need to use a gear oil with an additive specificly for limited slip carrier. My question is this. Is there a product out there that works better with these carriers than plain old off the shelf premix that you buy at autozone? I know redline makes one and richmond gear I believe make a premix but do any of you have any experience with any of these? Any noticeable difference??

I usually use (and have for years) Equa-Torq. Made by Sta Lube. The last couple times I serviced the diff. in the Jeep, I used Ford Motorsport Limited Slip additive, only because Randy's recommended it, and my dad bought a case..... Both work fine, and in the gov lock in my Z71, I won't use anything BUT the Equa Torq.

    YMMV, JMO, FWIW, etc.....

I know if you dont put additive it'll clunk like its gonna come out. I've tried all types of diff oils oil and sythetic based and always end up putting additive in it.

I've never used an additive for my Powerlok. I do use a 85 - 90 wt. that is compatible with limited slip. Most are these days. If you aren't getting chatter, don't bother with the additive.

Samething here. I had a Trac Lok in mine and used Valvoline gear oil which is formulated for LS diffs. Never did use additive. Trac Loks are lousy. Eventually swapped it out for an Auburn. A Power Lok would have been better but this is for an AMC 20.

The additive is a friction modifier that aids in the use of the locker regardless of oil type, add it in and the unit will last longer and work better.

My understanding is that it makes the oil more slippery to help eliminate chatter. If the LS doesn't chatter without additive, no need to use it. Yes, the use of additive will prolong the life of the unit but at the cost of effectiveness. Am I wrong here?

My understanding is it also helps disipate heat build up (along with the clatter) on the clutches themselves, which will extend there servicable life and make them work better, when you machine parts you are taught that heat is the enemy of all things, a certain amount is good, to much is detrimental to all things!;)

Little trivia tidbit, limited slip oil used to be made of whale oil.

Thought I remembered that but didn't trust my memory enough to mention it.
