I have a question that might be stupid but I cant find the answer to it anywhere. I have someone who is going to give me a 4.0 motor out of a 1995 Grand Cherokee. Cool huh. The question I have though is will my T176 Tranny bolt up to it or what do i have to do for this to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, how hard is this swap? Thanks

The 4.0L (242) and the 258 are mostly interchangeable. The 242 has a shorter stroke and larger bore, has some metric bolt holes for the motor mounts, and has no place for a mechanical fuel pump. The biggest difference is fuel injection - all the 4.0L engines are fuel injected, and using the 4.0L fuel injection could be a problem.

This can be a really good swap; take a look here http://www.jeepland.net/6cylboogie.shtml and here http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/yj40l_swap/index.htm for some more info. There's lots of info about this swap on the internet.

Here's another source: A forum dedicated to just this kind of swap:
    http://www.cjoffroad.com/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=24

A buddy of mine did this same swap in his '79 CJ7 (w/TH400 auto), it works great! His came from a '94 ZJ.
A couple things to keep in mind: You'll need the correct electric fuel pump to assure you have the correct fuel pressure at the fuel rail. You'll need a provision for the CPS, either drill the bellhousing or get a set up to install one on the harmonic balancer.
You might run into a starting problem with the ZJ wiring harness/computer due to the ZJ security system. A way around this is to use an XJ computer from the same year, no security system :)
Finally, the serpentine belt /water pump turns opposite from the one on the CJ, so the CJ fan won't work ... it will push air out instead of sucking air in through the rad... you'll need to get a reverse rotation fan.
That's about all I can recall from his swap... except that he got one of those tubes to install a K&N cone air filter. He used a small plastic bucket (ice cream container?) with the bottom cut out, installed this on the tube then put the K&N on inside the bucket. It keeps splash water from sucking into the K&N...

In the end, it's worth the effort, big seat-of-the-pants difference!

    Good luck, keep us posted!

More thoughts - I'm pretty sure you can use the CJ 2-barrel intake manifold on the 4.0L head, along with the 4.0L exhaust manifold. Thus it's possible to install your 4.0L and not use the fuel injection. However, I think you'd be passing up a great opportunity for a huge upgrade if you delete the 4.0L FI. You'll need to add an electric fuel pump if you use a carburetor, since the 4.0L block has no place for a mechanical fuel pump.

If you get really ambitious, you can put the 258 crank in the 4.0L block and build a stroker http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/stroker.html - installing the 4.0L with MPI is a big job... building a stroker is a really big job. There's a Yahoo stroker list that's probably the best source for help if you decide to build a stroker: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/strokers/

Yup, aside from the fuel injection its a very easy swap. Basicly bolt on for any cj that had a 258. If you have the abilities definately do the fuel injection. It made a night and day difference to the driveability of my jeep, and the fuel economy isn't bad either. ;)

I don't know if the older distributor would work in the 4.0 block. If you went carberated you would need it for the ignition timing. Otherwise you would need to use the 4.0 crank sensor, computer, and ignition module etc.... I would think the distributor dimensions are the same though as its nearly the same block as the 258.

You might have cooling fan issues. I went with an electric taurus fan as it looked like the normal 4.0 fan and fan clutch won't fit. Haven't verified it though.

Oh, and if yer gonna rebuild you might as well stroke it! :D

Ok here is the deal, this guy has the Jeep complete. It will not go because something is wrong with the rear axle. He wants to give me the whole jeep. So can i just take evrything out of the jeep and put into mine like the gas tanks computer and stuff like that? Also it is a 2WD jeep not a 4WD so i cant use the tranny so I will have to use my T176. Will the T176 bolt straight up to the 4.0? Again thanks for all your help. All is very appreciated. Thanks

A 4.0 has the same bellhousing boltpattern that all the amc jeep engines had I6 or V8. So I would say yes. If you have a V8 I think there is one motor mount you have to change. However you will need to obtain a flywheel for a stick shift tranny. And depending how you do the crank sensor you may need to send your bellhousing out to get modified to mount the crank sensor.

I have no idea if the fuel tank would fit in a cj5. I doubt it. Other than that you just have to figure out the wiring.
