In the past several years, I have had several problems with the wiring harness in the CJ. Right now I had one wire fry from the ign switch all the way to the engine compartment. I have thought about totally replacing the harness, and go with new wiring all the way around, or try to clean it up. Right now I don't even have a fuse block.

Do you guys have any suggestions? Should I repair what I have, or go the long route and replace the aged harness?

I have looked at EZ Wiring and Painless...I really don't know where to proceed from here...each time I get something fixed and get this beast back on the roa..er trail, somthing else sets me back

Depends on what you want. Depending on how extensive the damage is, you could repair it in place. I'm patient with wiring, so I'd probably opt to remove the harness entirely and repair it. A CJ harness is pretty simple in terms of wire routing.

With an old harness, you need to consider the cleanliness and condition of the connectors, corrosion in the wires, condition of the insulation, condition and resistance of any grounds, and any damage. Mechanical connections are often electrically troublesome.

Some get overwhelmed by all those wires, and want to remove it all and start over.

I tried to locate the bad wire, and I do believe I got most of it, I suspect a bad switch now...I think that is where the problem orginated in the first place...I guess I will have to locate one and replace it...I am patient and pretty careful of what I replace, but wiring the entire jeep would be a pain...and lengthy.

My first wiring job consisted of a toyota fuse box out of the salvage yard for $10 and the replacement of some of the brittle wireunder the hood or wire that had the insulation rubbed off. That got everything working and the fuse box prevented any potential fire (90% of my worry).

When I replaced the tub, I didn't even hesitate to call Painless.

    I'd start with a fuseblock. :D

I had issues with the wiring on my 75. I rewired it myself 4 times. Each time got a little bit more professional, but it still never worked right. Finally I broke down and got a painless kit. Fixed everything and now I have an up to date fuse block with the atc type fuses. It was well worth the money. You still have to make all the wire connections away from the fuse block, but all the wires are labeled as to what they do right on the insulation. Seemed easy to me, although I kinda like wiring cars.

Painless or Centech are good harnesses. But check out EZ wiring, a quality harness for close to half the price of a Painless.

And a complete rewire job on a CJ isn't difficult. I had no wiring experience, and installed a complete new harness from scratch... including all grounds on my glass tub, soldering every connection... my total time was about 40 hours, during evenings and weekends. With any experience, and good planning and prep, it could be done in half that time.

    Welcome aboard :)

I have an EZ wiring harness waiting for the weather to warm up so I can install it in my '61. Cost $165.00 plus shipping.

I have always liked the two tone paint job, 73CJ85XJ. How is the new XJ holding up, have you decided to OD it yet?
