I verified #1 TDC on compression stroke by the fact that the loose spark plug blew out on the way to the timing mark (hand turning engine clockwise while facing from front of Jeep). The dizzy points to about 2 or 3 o'clock. I know I can just orient #1 plug to that mark, however while it's in that position I do not have enough retard on the timing plate to get her to start. Engine bucks and won't start.

Question: am I missing something, or was the oil pump installed slightly off? Easier fix out there besides taking the pump off?

Sorry, F134. Rebuilt IAY 4401 from Willys Distributors (with a Pertronix).

Drop the pump & rotate the shaft until it's in the right spot, it will take 2 0r 3 tries. Make sure you have a fresh gasket. Not that hard to do but easier from underneath.

Will I need to re-prime the pump? Or is it as easy unbolting just enough to drop and rotate?

    Thanks

If you have help you can do as you ask about, slide it out far enough to be able to turn it with a long screwdriver while someone holds the pump so it won't fall out. Unless of course you want to change the gasket as Howard suggests. Do you understand clearly about the offset?

The slot in the pump, tang on the dizzie are a bit off middle.

FWIW, my dizzie has cylinder 1 at about 1 o'clock.

From the service manual pertaining to the oil pump: If the installation was properly made, the slot will be in a position roughly equivalent to eleven o'clock position with the wider side of the shaft on top.
