    Rubicon prep continues

Finished the gears in front axle. Needed a case spreader to get it out :susp:

I'm getting older and remembering Tcase shift patterns is getting harder so this went on

The sticker came with two smileys, spare tire brake light and windshield seemed appropriate

And got a shift knob since I stole my old one for the twin stick.

Even tho the Jeep and I are still not on speaking terms I'm pressing on

Made a plate to mount the winch, which I painted and made all sexy but didn't take a pic. I have 1/2" plate on the outside of the frame horns, PO nicely welded them on. I decided to just drill and tap the plate to hold the 90 degree angle pieces.

This mount is overkill and a bit on the heavy side.

Got the winch mounted and started making progress on the hole for the cable and installing the fair lead.

Just need to take the cut off wheel and connect the holes, to make a... hole. Then mount the fair lead and go get stuck.

And previously there was some concern over the bend I put in my tie rod to clear my power steering gear. After a little testing it was a valid concern. So I plated it like so, tests are good now.

After driving this thing a bunch more and listening to the noise I've become 88.3% certain my noise is from the Tcase. Picked up this Dana 18 from @Jeepsterjim

It has very little wear on the shafts and gears so expecting this to be a major improvement over my totally worn out sloppy one.

And rebuilt the insides and stripped all the funk and debauchery off.

    Ready for paint

And installed it. But I don't have any oil and am too tired to go get some so there's always tomorrow for a test drive.

Glad the X-fer was in decent condition. It's hard to know until tearing them apart.

Well, I still haven't put oil in the transfer case... but I did drive it from the driveway into the garage. At 0.36mph, over a whopping 11' backwards and 13' forwards it was flawless, no vibrations, no shakes, no noises .

At this point I don't know when I'll have time to revisit it. My Dad moved into my place and needs 24/7 care so for the foreseeable future I'm in a non Jeep stage of life. Luckily my Dad is improving, slowly, but definite improvement. After the stroke he is learning to walk all over again and has even made a few unstable passes across the living room with just the assistance of a cane (and me preventing a couple spectacular crashes). That's a huge improvement from a month ago, even holding on to something and standing up was nearly impossible.

Hoping this delivery will kick start some progress on the Jeep. It's been a LONG LONG time since I focused on it. Since I have power steering I wanted a smaller steering wheel. I ordered this 14" aluminum job from Summit and the adapter that fits the ECJ column.

In case anybody is wondering which steering wheel adapter fits our ECJ's it the Grant 4405. Our columns are 36 spline 3/4" shaft if that helps anyone.

Here is the adapter front and back
    [IMG]

The adapter fits absolutely perfect, I thought for sure I would need to modify it somehow.

Here is the size comparison between stock 17" wheel and 14" wheel.

The only modification I had to make was to drill the center hole of the steering wheel slightly larger to fit it over the 3/4" shaft.

And there it is installed, it is so much more comfortable now. It felt a little claustrophobic before.

You can see in that last picture that I have the transmission hanging from a couple tie-down straps. Everything is disconnected except the cross member. Just need to lower it down now. The next project is to rebuild the SM420, it's making more noise than I can ignore these days. I bought a rebuild kit so... how hard could it be? :worry:

Pretty far in to the transmission rebuild now. It's all disassembled.

    But...

The noise you hear in this video is exactly like the noise I was hearing while driving. Is there any chance the reverse shaft could be spinning and rubbing like this while using forward gears?

@47v6 How do you get this shaft out of the TC adapter? I've removed the snap rings on both sides. Do I press it out?

Started the afternoon by striping off the bell housing and cross member.

Then I lifted this thing onto the bench. Only minor swelling in my thorax, pelvic girdle and Anterior and lateral thoracic regions, minor displacement of my cranial cavity and 7 burst veins in my forehead. I'll be ok in a few weeks, thanks for your concern.

    Why is it so heavy!

The rest of these photos are more for me to remember how it came apart, but who knows some of you people might get some enjoyment out of them so here they are.

And I showed this snap ring who's boss that's for sure... No idea how to get that out without ruining it.

Pulled this bearing and the lower shaft came out.

And now I'm left with this

Everything is in really good shape. The two bearings on the upper shaft were very smooth and not likely to be the source of my awful noise. One of the bearings in my TC adapter sounds a little suspect but nothing alarming. Once I get the shaft out of the TC adapter I'll be ready to clean and reassemble everything.

I can't remember how to get the shaft out, probably have to press it out. All my transmission and driveshaft noise was in my transfer case. Once I rebuilt it with new gears, shafts and AA tapered bearing conversion, it all went away...

My synchro issues were similar solved by adjusting my clutch a bit tighter to fully disengage at full pedal..

    Good luck!
