Small Garages Or Small Workshops Thread

I see something peeking in

 

So thats the "right" way to work on lights in a tall shop? Here I thought it was to put a ladder in the back of a pickup truck and stand on the top rung?

 

Been there, done that.

Good luck with the new shop Chuck, if you move. Only been to SLC a couple of times, and enjoyed the trip both times. The streets are very wide, the people are friendly and nice.

 

I guess I'm about to join the small shop club. We are going to be making an offer on a house with a 16x18 garage. There is an approximately 10x10 falling down shed in the back to store stuff. And eventually (a year out or so), I'll Build a real shop out back where the shed is now. Somehow I need to fit all the tools and two jeeps: parts off and parts on the new one. But I am thankful to be out of a rental and back to home ownership.

 

As someone said in this thread, cleaning out garage leads to playing with stuff. Had to dig out a puller to fix my table saw and found this guy. Brought back fond memories of working on my brothers 55 Olds with my dad. Had to put it together and crank it just a bit for old times.

 

Seems like every weekend lately has me working on something I wasn’t planning on or helping someone else for a day. Then the next day is spent on the shed, fighting the wind, and just generally not feeling like I got much done. This was another one of those weekends. Last weekend was another yet. Managed to get some paint on the the trim on the front of the shed a week ago. Trimmed out and almost finished the wainscoting today.

Feels like eating a whale.





I matched the brown from the windows. Didn’t want to bring in another color to the mix. Still need to decide what to do for finishing the big doors but it’ll probably include cutting some panels and painting them white to match the walk door.

 

It's hard , especially when doing this yourself & working full time too. But it looks great . BTW, your "Walk Door" only has a very light grey/ white primer on it.

 

Another day of sneaking in time between needing to get other stuff done and dodging the weather. Three sides are totally done minus slinging some silicone around the window frames. Almost forgot about the snow bars still needing to get on the roof... I found those tucked in a corner.

Still a long road ahead.

Only a few hours again to work this weekend. Over the past couple weeks I’ve been working with my brother (the original architect/drafter for the shed) to change the carport. Of course I can’t just make that kind of decision on my own so I needed to get the regional building department involved to change the print attached to the permit. In times like these, this isn’t all that easy as their office has been shut down for months now. Emails were past, countless phone calls were made, and in the spirit of government run around I was charged my $50 to splice the print PLUS the $3.50 “convenience charge” over the phone... because I had a choice right now?

See, my neighbor to the south doesn’t like me all too much due to this whole project. Haven’t ever met face to face before but the general consensus heard from the rest of the neighborhood is that these people absolutely hate me. In the early stages of construction there was a dusting of dirt along the backside of his fence, the city got involved, and I built the wood retaining wall along the fence line. Next they didn’t care for the size or location of the shed, the city got involved, and they were given all of the public information concerning my project and that I was abiding to the city and county building restrictions. Then a couple weeks ago they complained about deer getting in their yard by jumping the fence from said retaining wall, the city once again got involved, they were reminded again that I was in compliance and that Colorado is a free range state after all. I was actually waiting for that complaint since I noticed they installed a trail camera pointing at my yard. I’m pretty sure it comes down to it that they’re an older couple who have nothing better to do and they don’t like change. Well?... maybe they should’ve bought the property before I did. Anyhow, rant over.

The carport change is due to trying to avoid a potential future problem of a single snowflake landing on their fence or property. I decided to change the pitch from north/south to east/west. It’s pretty much the same material just laid out differently than originally planned. So anyways, I started on that today and then got rained out.




The new pitch will be a 2.5/12 making the rear of the carport fairly low at just about 5’ at the bottom of the 6x12 horizontal beam. My plan all along has been to set my reserve air tanks from my compressor outside. They’ll live back there and I’ll sheet that back wall to keep the weather off them.

More progress next weekend? Nope. I already know I won’t have time.

 

my neighbor hasn't like my garage since it was built . but he has a 16X16 shed in his yard
we get along as neighbors go . used to make lots of noise back there . not so much nowadays

 

This reminds me why we bought a house with the nearest neighbors a mile away.

 

Definitely easier to do in Pullman than in other parts of the country. I wish we could find that kind of space!

 

Does anyone know the weight of four 9.5’ rough cut 6x12s is?



...whatever the equivalent of three Advil PMs is. The height at the front of the carport obviously caught up to me with changing the direction of the pitch. Keep in mind that it’s only a 2.5/12. Still a big difference from front to back. The ceiling height will work out great for putting my air tanks at the rear and I’ll still have room for a full size truck backed in, a decent size car trailer, or whatever else might come along. No real plans for what might live there long term.

 

Looking so great!, would love to have that much space to work in.

Thought i’d share my workspace: 1959 Ranch style single car garage:


metal saw and welder(on mobile-ish cart):

wood cutting table, oft-used tools hung in their spots and my Kirkland toolset ready to go. (Been using it solely to see if it would work stand-alone. I already broke the 3/8’s drive ratchet. All else is great)

I’d love something twice as big but having worked on cars in driveways and installed lift kits on sloped streets in the past, this is a still a HUGE blessing in my life, in dealing with my Jeep sickness safely and in relative comfort.

Definitely planning on new flooring (or at least pulling up all the crap tile that is failing) and some new lighting sources.
