I'm separating this out from my build thread to hopefully get help a little more quickly...

The tranny that had a little water in in when I got the jeep last year. I did my best to get it all out and then filled the case up with oil in the hopes to keep things from getting any worse while I finished school...

It hasn't gotten any worse but I was hoping to pull the gears out in a couple big pieces so I can get all the scabby rust and schmoo out of the case. As per the usual this has proved to be more difficult than the internet led me to believe. SO before I break something expensive whats the best way to get all the gears out in as few pieces as possible??? Or if there is a better solution that I don't know about PLEASE enlighten me :)

You need a factory service manual.

Textbook direction is to start at the rear of the transmission and use a puller to get the rear bearing out. I have an OD so not sure how that bull/TC drive gear on the rear is removed. I wasn't able to pull the rear bearing so the next option is to drive out the lower countershaft which should allow the lower cluster gear (set of 3) to drop to the bottom of the case and give enough clearance to remove the front input shaft with front bearing and input gear (of course remove the front bearing retainer first).

A couple things to note: Can't remember if the lower counter shaft has to be driven out in a specific direction - it may have a slightly tapered fit. Inside of the lower cluster gear will be all the needle bearings that the shaft rides on - don't loose them. There are also needle bearings where the input shaft mates to the main shaft - keep track of those as well. See if this thread helps a bit:

    Fino's 1970 mini build thread

If I can find and scan the novak and fsm directions I used - I will try to post.

Just a thought - you are going to have to take the internals mostly apart to get the inside of the case cleaned as well as to inspect the gears, shaft etc - in other words the internals don't come out in a big group that stays together. But - if you can get the rear bearing off first, then you should be able to split the mainshaft off the input shaft (watch out for those pesky needle bearings at the mating point), then you can get the input shaft and gear (that is the one that looks most rust damaged). The advantages to this would be that the lower countershaft and cluster gear and associated needle bearing would not have to be touched if they are not damaged.

Either way, if you are going this far in, you may want to consider getting a rebuild kit with new bearings and synchronizers etc. Many of us use Novak - the kit comes with pretty decent directions and pics to at least get you started. I had never done a rebuild until I did mine last year - started with the D18 as it has fewer pieces - but in some ways the T14 is easier as there is less finnicky stuff (less seals and no bearing cap spacers etc). It basically just goes together in a specific order one piece after another.

The counter shaft will have to come out it will be rusty. Rust in the bearings and on the gears leads to a short life. Btdt going on number three on the boys 70. Novak kits are nice, clean everything good and take your time.

I have a pdf scan of the Novak T14 directions - too large to post here (and maybe not in the best interest of copyright issues). Shoot me a PM (Conversation) with your email address and I will send it to you.

edit: try this link to see if it works (I posted on my google drive work account and tried to make public sharing)
    T14 Novak Rebuild Directions.pdf

If it does work - make sure you download/save it to your computer or print it out as I probably can't keep it at this location forever - but I'll leave it here for the summer as there is no school.

For admin types - is there a reference place (technical index?) we could post these assuming its okay since it from Novak? The file is about 5MB.
