I have a 1977 231 EF just got a 4BBL intake for it R) ! My question is should i hook up the EGR or just block it off? will it run the same or will i have idle prob. and/or back fire prob. (decell)???? will heat and carbin build up in the EGR intake port and cause prob?? BTW The carb i will be running is a 390 holley that was on a 225 OF.

Next question is about the PVC placement. Is the PVC on the intake and/or valve cover? i thought (this is when thangs go wrong most the time) the PVC went on the valve cover but, i have found some threads that say it is on the intake and the hole in the valve cover is just a vent !?!?

    any ideas???

You are in Ca.....I think some computers just started running at the mere suggestion of an EGR disconnect

Should be no trouble blocking the EGR. Be sure that your block-off plate keeps exhaust gas from getting into the intake.

PVC = poly vinyl chloride. PCV = positive crankcase ventilation ... you need an inlet and an outlet for the crankcase gases. Typically there is a fresh air inlet (from a filter of some sort) that goes into the valve cover. The crankcase gases are then sucked into the intake by manifold vacuum, through the intake manifold or at the base of the carburetor. If your intake manifold has a grommet with a big hole, the PCV valve likely goes there, and a hose connects to the valve cover opposite the PCV air intake. Otherwise the PCV valve sits in the big grommet in the valve cover and goes to the carb base or a small grommet in the intake manifold.

In CA, only the '76 and newer cars go in for a smog check. If you told the CARB that you have a '77 engine in your '68 (or whatever) Jeep, they might insist you smog check it. There's no safety inspection, so unless you turn yourself in...

Toss the EGR, but run the PCV.

Its true about not having to smog a vehicle once its been registered in your name but if you just purchased or just getting on road and transferring the title then you have to get a smog check must be done first.

i have a gromit next to the EGR valve. i will plan on putting the PVC in it and run a hose to the base of carb. also, i will put a vent hose to the gromit in the valve cover and run it to the air cleaner.
and If it won't cause any probs. i'll block off the EGR valve.

If this sounds right let me know!?! ;)

Actually just last year they stopped the rolling 20yr exemption again. Its still 75 and older. So everything 76 and up needs inspection. Of course the way its worded just means that 75 and older no longer have bi-annual inspections, but they still must retain original smog equipment.

Anyhow, I too would keep the pcv and ditch egr. Unless you need it for smog reasons, which it doesn't sound like you do.

    Re: EGR and PCV ??

i'm a big dope yes i mean PCV.
should i run the hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner for as fresh as california air can get (as a air inlet vent to the block). and the PCV from the intake to the bottom of the carb?

If the intake manifold grommet opens into the crankcase, then that's right. "Fresh" air goes into the valve cover, through the crankcase, through the PCV valve, and into the intake (manifold vacuum) where it's burned with the fuel.
