    OK here it is

during the winter we had a few days that had snow covered roads, so I thought I should put it in 4wd, no problem the little bugger went well ( 69 225 v-6 3 spd warn overdrive etc) well in the afternoon the snow on the main road was all melted off so as I come off a still snowy road and turn on to the just wet road i take it out of gear and come to almost a rolling stop( I know I Know almost is the key word here) and pushed the 4wd stick in to 2wd, and long behold I get a sound like I just dropped my driveline, so i stop get out and look, drivelines still attached, and it sounded fine in 2wd, but i tried to put back in 4wd and it did go but made that sound, and makes it when it is in 4wd,, what gives??? help......

SOunds like the shift fork might have gotten bent or something.. you can just take the front housing off the t case and get a good look at it...

Dana 18 t-case - right? I recently found some broken gear teeth in mine but they broke while just driving slow in 4WD - not related to shifting while moving. I would say take the OD or pan off and take a look inside. May be hard to see a bent shift fork but broken gear teeth are fairly easy to spot.
With the broken teeth mine made a tick tick tick noise while driving in 2WD. It did this only after the 3rd tooth in a row had broke.

Lynn, I dont think the tranny mount is all that good, I know it needs replacing, all the bolts are tight, but I need to make sure they are not moving, im pretty sure it is a Dana 18 transfer case, it is all original, that could have been tha cause, a bad tranny mount. hoping for something easy like a shift fork, but you all know how that goes.......

if you got broken teeth in there its likely due to a worn intermediate shaft. when the shaft wears, the gear riding on it will ride offcenter and bind with other gears. if it gets real bad, it could cause a chipped tooth. the gear on the intermediate shaft is always spinning whether its in 4wd or not, and its common for wear here. see this link for more info.

if it was a worn gear on the intermediate shaft would it make that noise all the time? because mine only makes the noise in 4wd, 2wd it runs great

Did you check your front driveshaft, u-joints, pinion nut/pinion yoke? Also, with the hubs locked it should go into and out of 4wd at just about any reasonable speed. Reasonable being less than about 50 mph. Before you try removing the front output assembly, drop the pan and do a visual inspection. Check the oil you drain for metal particles or chunks. Chunks are a bad thing. Minute metal particles are normal.

Posimoto, you win the prize, got looking at it and the pinion nut was undone, and the reason I did not notice it was because the tranny skid plate caugt it and didnt make it fall, looks like the pinion yoke is cracked, anyone know how spendy they are?

If you have lock out hubs check them out, sounds like you have one hub locked in and the other one out.

has yokes. looks like $35-$52, depending on which one you need.

Of course you could probably find someone with some good used ones for small bucks...
