Have a great opportunity to purchase a 77 dash in really good shape as a replacement for a homemade dash in a 72. I get that it won't be original but I am OK with that, I just want something that looks like a jeep dash. Can I get this in a 72 without to much modifying? Thanks

A couple of the bolt holes at the ends of the dash are slightly different on the late dash (76-86) than on the early and intermediate dashes. I think the steering column hole will be your biggest problem. The late model steering column comes through a large hole in the dash with a plastic bezel to close it back up. The intermediate column bolts through a cutout in the bottom of the dash with a flange welded to the column. I think you could make it work with a little sheet metal work. A nice dash for any vintage cj can be hard to find so it might be worth it. Also the later dash will have radio and speaker holes.

Your dash harness may need to be rebuilt due to different location of some switches.

The windshield catches are also very different, so you'll have to modify that.

You can buy a new dash -

There are some good pictures of the early, intermediate and late dashes at the link, that you can compare.

As replacement parts go, they aren't that hard to make. There may be other places that make them - this is the first I found when searching.
