Hunting season is near so somebody needs to quit screwing around and get this jeep back together. First thing, the new seal for the timing cover is neoprene and the previous was rope. Do I just drive the old one out and the new one in? Any secret tricks? Also I read somewhere that I must pack the oil pump with something like vasoline so it will prime. What is that? Perhaps like taking a friend snipe hunting or telling them you have to warm maggots up under your tongue before you put them on the hook? Thanks, Don

It's a real thing. Or you can use warm maggots.

Vaseline is thick enough to create good suction, but then easily dilutes into the oil when it's no longer needed.

ok the old seal popped right out and the new right in. Fresh out of warm maggots so where do I pack the vaseline at, right in the pick up.(control yourselves, I know that line has like 10,000 jokes it begs for)

The vasaline gets packed in the pump housing all around the gears-basically any air space in the pump needs to be packed with the vasaline, then install the bottom part of the housing where the filter mounts.

It's generally a good idea when asking these questions to put in your post what type of engine, transmission, transfer case, axle, etc. you are working with. Lots of people who could give good information and advice will simply move on if pertinent info is not offered.

For 225, definitely pack the pump with petroleum jelly.

For the L & F-heads I've always just filled them with oil before mounting. Immerse the pump in clean oil and rotate the shaft back and forth until all the air is expelled.
