What Is The Name And How To Repair? Help Needed

There was some noise below and a bad feeling : this transmission part is moving inside his bed, and I suppose that it must be changed.
It seems easy, 4 screws to take off and probably just tear the metal rod.
There is a spring to move away and I have some books and the big one (technical book) about the Jeep.
I suppose also that there are many posts on the subject, but I have problems with the technical vocabulary.

Question 1 : is it easy to do?
2 - do I need a special tooling?
3- what is the name of the parts in english?
4 - maybe it is easier to me to bring the transmissions to the shop for farming machines in my village there is at least 3 shops aroud, this one is for new Holland, an other one is for Case, John Deere is too far.
5 - and most important : can it break suddenly when I am on the road, how long can this stay without accident?

I understand that parts are easy to find... I have seen that on Amazon we find u-joints.
But how can I guess the exact model! Wait and see answers!

 

alan driveshaft u joint and yes you could remove the whole drive shaft and take it to your shop to be replaced . 4 nuts at rear brake (front yoke) and 2 u bolts at rear . just remember to tape around rear u joint so caps don't fall off

 

Alan, if the part Focker showed is the bad part, you will need a "1310 series" u joint, Spicer number 153x. Buy a good one, like the Spicer brand. While, you're at it, you may want to replace the one at the axle end of the driveshaft also.

It can be a frustrating job. You sometimes need 4 hands to hold everything while you're putting it back together. You will need to press or pound the old u joints out of the driveshaft then, press or pound the new ones back in.

If you take the driveshaft out of the jeep and take it to your repair shop, they should have no problem putting the new parts in for you.

 

Yes I have only 2 hands, and one is not perfect now. I'll check tomorrow with my friends of farming machines...

At Amazon I have found answer, but price of delivery is high... maybe they have some stock at the shop for farm machines, they use lot of parts like this!

You should be able to get one locally as it is the same size universal joint in all Jeep propeller shafts back to 1942. Best to change joint at both ends while you have it removed from the Jeep.

I paid 31 euros in France at the local Jeep shop.
I spent the morning to take out the transmission axle.
Then I went to my local farming repair shop for installing the u-joint, during this time my wife was shopping at the supermarket.
And in the evening I re-installed the transmission.
After test : it works well. Photos soon. Thanks to all.
These little needles are not very happy to stay in the u-joint. I had to take care of them; but the specialist at the shop had the same problem!

Howard, I did the same thing with a M37. That's one of the advantages of 4wheel drive!

 

I didn't know you have yokels in Canada, I thought it was just a southern thing. We have more than our share in Tulsa.

Boy if you could just shake on it and get it to drop, all the needle bearings must have been totally shot. I'm surprised you made it to where you did without it flying off on its own. I've thrown a drive shaft before while moving, and it was not a fun experience. Fortunately, it was the rear and not the front, which is why drag cars have safety loops.
