I was fine coming off the trail but developed this pattern by the time I got home (about 50 miles). What am I up against? Dana 44 rear axle

Probably outer axle seal is leaking. Better check it out as it probably has soaked the brakes as well.

Did you have a dust cap over that nut before? Looks to me like you had one, lost it & the grease got flung outwards.

There should not be grease in that area with or without the cap. The cap does not keep grease in, it simply protects the nut and end of the axle shaft.

What Nikmil wrote, should be dry under the cap.

That 44 is a tapered axle which means there should not be any way for grease to come out of that area of hub to axle. Only if the hub is loose should this happen. I have never seen this happen where grease ran out from the center of the hub.

Some people put grease in there to keep the nut from rusting.
