If it is a stock 71 with factory V-6 it will have a 10 spline output shaft.

I'm an F head guy, but IIRC, the stock V6 Jeeps were mostly geared 3.73 from the factory. Would you even want an overdrive?

not sure it just seems to be reving high rpm's at 60 even with the 3:73's and 33's that mesure out to a 32 1/2

Wow, I've got 3.73's and 32's, and I've had it up to 95, and it had more. A little scary, but I certainly don't need an OD! :D

Could have the factory 4.88 gear option in it.

I don't feel good about paying $400++ on ebaY but that is the going rate. The problem I have is wear and tear. Even the slightest oil starvation can wreck an OD. Many used sellers may not be aware if there is damage inside when they let their T-case go too low.

If I ever get one, I will fork out the cash to Herm first and be confident I have a solid unit. Read up on Herm's warnings on the OD.

I can second that re the "unknowns" of Ebay ODs. I bought one from what was supposed to be a 4WDshop in TX that was in "Good Shape, ready to use" but in reality had set full of water for some time. They guy knew it because it came to me partially disassembled, and buggered up at that.

Off to Herm it went for a rebuild . . . All in all I think I had more in it than what Herm gets for his rebuilds. If you are seriously in the market, save yourself the grief and talk to Herm-

ok thanks guys. just thought an od would be a great option on my cj. but it is just as well that i did't spend the money. from what i've been reading from you guys is i don't really need an od with 3:73 gears. so i will just leave it alone

i got the od to install on mine as a gear splitter, as one gear is too low and next is too high. i alo plan on regearing down the road w/4.27's (or 4.88's if they can be found).

I had the OD with 3.73's and 31's. Never really needed it on the road - but it was kinda cool off road to split gears and stay in 4 Lo even if the trail opened up a bit.
