What's Wrong With This Picture? .. Drag Link Breakdown

    I'm working on rebuilding my cj5 steering bellcrank and drag link components. When examining the FSM detailed diagram for draglink components, it seems that a ball seat is missing at the Pitmann end (see black arrow I placed in the diagram below). In other words, the diagram does not show -- at least I don't see -- an internal ball seat to receive the Pittman-arm ball. There should be a ball seat placed in the drag link first, shouldn't there, followed by inserting the Pittman ball, followed by another ball seat (#3 in right side of Figure)? Or, what am I missing? -- Ron

    I had to look to verify what I remember, but Walck's kit shows 3 of the ball seats so yes from what I recall what you describe is correct.

    My 66 connecting rod had the ball seat pressed in on the end for the pitman arm.

    The tension on the pivot balls - once the end adjusters are tightened - is at the rear bearing surface on the Pitman arm, and at the front of the pivot ball on the bell crank. This takes into account shock loading at both the front and rear of the drag link.
