I'm trying to find information on the process of replacing these panels. I've read that the supports around the tail gate opening needs to be removed first then the repair or replacement can be made. I've used the search feature but could not find any threads that covered this repair. The jeep is a 63 CJ5. Thanks.

Getting the tailgate surrounds off requires drilling out about three separate layers of spot welds plus some grinding. This is the only pic I could find of mine (Helps if lay on your left side to look at it :))-

This was *not* a fun job.

After you have the side angles removed you'll need to use your favorite method of metal dis-assembly to spring the light panels loose from the wheel wells & sides.

I replaced these on my re-build. If I recall correctly you don't need to remove the supports. I just drilled the spot welds that were holding the the panel to the tailgate supports then drilled the spot welds holding the panel to the side panel. I don't have any pictures of the panels removed just the before and after shots. Just take your time, its not that difficult.

I've done it twice, but I only have pics of the one that I replaced everything back there. About 8 pics down. Varg in Jeep's Clothing
It just takes a lot of patience, and ignoring that feeling that you are getting in over your head.

Ok, looking at the pictures reminded me that the spot welds were to the tailgate support and around the top where it is connected to the fender tub. Mine was welded to the side panel where the seam was. I also cut part of my tailgate support of at the top because I was doing somthing differant then the chains, so I wanted to clean it up. I hope this helps.

This is why I cut the top half off. I removed the part that held the chains in place and replaced it with the plates to hold the seat belts, for a cleaner look, (and it doesnt rattle).

I made mine a few years ago and didn't cut the top part out as I had no way to bend it to be correct. It involved clamps, spot weld cutter and a cutting disk. Bent the things over a 2X8 piece of channel using a 2X4, hammers and the clamps. Welded them in with the wire feed from the back.
