The Dana 44 rear tapered axle shafts butt up against the center bloks. The center blok can move from side to side maybe 1/4". So yes technically you can eliminate all shim adjustments from one of the wheel bearings. Myself I prefer to always put a single .030 ajustment shim on one side. Then I gauge whats required and make all final adjustments (approximately another .030") on the other wheel bearing.
