I'm working to eliminate the front end shimmy in my '66 CJ5. I have the stabilizer on the tie rods, but even still I'm reluctant to push the MPH for fear of shimmy. So, after much reading here about death wobble and the related, and reading about cleaning/rebuiding the knuckle -- including the Novak on-line write-up -- I'm still with a question about how exactly to handle the pre-load on bearings.

Is it this? After cleaning/lubing, put the original shims back on (I found two on top kingpin), and then torque the four bolts to 40 lbs. Then, use a fish (spring) scale to pull on the free-moving knuckle arm. Look for 12 to 16 pounds resistance. Then, if too much resistance during the sweeping move of knuckle, do I un-do the four bolts, put in another shim, and tighten down to 40 lbs again, and run the fish scale measurement?

Or, if too little resistance -- after tightening the four bolts to 40 pounds torque -- open up again to remove a shim?

Is this the sequence? -- essentially trial and error? Following each shim addition or deletion with a 40 pound torque -- followed by a spring-scale measurement?.... then stopping when reaching 12-16 lbs on the scale?

Thanks for your help -- I know a lot of you folks have gone thru this procedure and I want to be sure I understand it perfectly. -- Ron

Yup, that's about it. No grease in the knuckles & leave the bell seals off when you do it. It's not as labour intensive as it sounds, once you're set up it goes quickly.

I used a "mechanical" fish scale but I saw a guy use a digital one that looked neat
