does the strapping need to go all the way down the length of the frame? also should i just tack weld it down or run a bead all the way down?

well today i got the engine mounts removed along with the battery tray. the rear (bumper) cross member is removed as well. i'm really debating on keeping the rear a shaped thing in the rear. is that part really needed? i'm leaning on running two under seat gas tanks but may just put a rear tank in which then i will have to remove the a shaped thingy. hoping to bring the frame to the blaster and see what is really going on at the spring hangers for cracks.
i did ask in the last post but have not gotten a response. should i run a solid bead or just tack weld the strapping?

Just went and looked. the under frame strapping on my 6 is only welded like 1in. every4 to 5 in. probably should alternate the welds. definitely needs sealed up good so rust don't start in between the frame and strap.
I kept the under seat tank, but also built a second tank and mounted under the body in the "6" area on mine.

going to be cutting some 1-1/2 " 12 guage straps to run along the top of the frame like what "project71-5" did on his frame. also going to fix the bottom straps as well. ordering some weldable primer to put between the strap and the frame to help with the rust issue. was thinking of doing stitch welds all down the frame over the course of the week until a solid bead is achieved to no water or dirt can get in or is that not really necessary.

wouldn't think solid weld is necessary, but i'm no pro either. might even cause welds to crack if solid

The 'frame thingy' is the support for the draw pull hitch system. In the old days there would/could be a pintle hitch mount on the back there and the V support was to help with strength.

John, I removed mine to put in a 71 and up tank back there. Haven't had any issues.

Just remember that V support bracing back there was also instrumental in being able to use that rear hitch or bumper in order to tow someone or something out along with perhaps maybe pulling a stump.......I would add some extra bracing alongside the original frame rails all the way to the cross member.........or even box that frame section in.......especially since yours seems to have some rust.

I wouldn't weld the strap solid, if a crack starts it will run the whole length. If it was stitched it would only crack the one stitch. Weld through primer and paint followed with fluid film will prevent most of the rust.

another vote for not getting rid of anything prior to the end of the build. The tub, while needing floors, seems to be in not too bad a shape. The frame can also be strengthened by boxing the inside, like the later frames. Personally I like boxing more than strapping. If you remove the V support in the back, I think you need to reinforce it with something else.

today was a good day for working on the jeep. had some straps made at work the other day and started placing them in place.... i made these 1-1/2" wide and is 12 gauge...
will that be too close to the "bend" in the frame channel when i go to stitch weld the straps? or should i make it flush with the other side so i don't get into that bend radius?
i drilled a hole to go over that big flat rivet near the rear crossmember and stopped short enough everywhere else to weld.
went all the way to the back of the frame and will be making a rear crossmember to replace the old rusted one
    [IMG]
ran into a snag though..when i was grinding away the rust on the top of the frame rail it started smearing this black substance all over. i think it's the frame coating from the factory. so now i need to buy some lacquer thinner and see if it will come off nice.
nothing is welded yet but has been labeled for assy. later.

also while working on the jeep i was trying to get all the crud out of the boxed in area for the engine and all this came out....this is not your average sized dust pan!!!

just forward of the master cylinder mount and where the ross steering mounts to the frame there is no place for the dirt and such to come out. it was filled with dirt, rust, mice carcasses, walnuts and mice nests. the metal just forward of the ross box may need some attention.

just so you all know this is on the top side of the frame. i will be flipping the frame over and fixing the factory strapping. or is it not really needed on the top side?

When you decide to get rid of the tub let me know. The tub on my plow jeep is in bad shape.

    Project is looking good:cool:
