I hadn't really thought about it but I guess nothing is done to the shaft itself for the tapered bearing setup?

It's a custom shaft. Totally different from stock.

I think I'd get the Novak hardened shaft, which also has the o-rings and the bearings from Novak too. If nothing else you'd be able to determine how long it lasts this time. My past experiences have been strictly that the shafts have worn and the bearings looked ok.

I think that's where I'm headed for the time being..;)
For a hundred bucks, it's certainly worth a try.

So, Nick is sending me a darn good used original shaft, and I'll buy needle bearings and thrust washers from Novak...
Thanks for the input folks.....Made for a good thread.;)

You guys are scaring me, I just finished rebuilding a second big hole T 18 with a Novak kit, and all new bearings for my Jeep with a F 134 in it thinking it would last forever. Now I am wondering if it will, I only drive it about 1,000 miles a year or so, mostly Forest viewing and cruises, and a show or two with our Cruise Club. I have a ground down intermediate shaft that will go through if anyone wants to borrow it, for a rebuild.

The harder you use them obviously equates to quicker wear. I would think with your intended usage yours will last a long time, maybe forever (in relative terms) as you mention.

Thanks Glenn, I looked at the forum for a long time before deciding what I was going to do. I don't want to have to do it again, I am keeping the one that is in it now. I like to have two of everything, just in case.

Rick, I am not far behind you on this, I have a d18 large hole in a wood box I built, I cleaned up, AlOx blasted, painted, and oiled before packing it away, disassembled. I keep thinking I'll find another twin stick kit and may be think about terra lows for it. May do the AA tapered bearing if I drag it back out.

Have a t-14 I did same with. I have no plans for the t-14, other than it was original with the jeep.

Both need bearings and seals no matter what I do.

I should update here; I pulled the transfer case and replaced the intermediate shaft and bearings. The shaft had fairly minimal wear (don't have pics just now) and the thrust washers had little wear. I installed a used but very good original factory shaft, and it still whines. I guess "it is what it is".

Tomorrow I'm going to pull the Sears and fuel tank, and install a new molded front floor mat. That'll make it quiet..:watch:

I'm fine with it, because now I know the intermediate shaft is OK.

Those D18s will whine after a few thousand miles even with new, quality parts. I took the radio out of my 3B finally as I couldn't hear it anymore.
