I have plastic high back "racing" seats in my '61 on original frames. I hinged the rear of the seat on the frame with a large piano hinge. The front of the seat is held down with two studs with quick pins. To get to the toolbox, just remove the pins, tilt the seat back and the seat frame forward. Hard to explain but it works well.

I thought I might have gotten a reply but If you can't laugh at your friends I suppose you have to laugh at yourself, I do enough of that.

I'll throw out another idea for the tool box lid opening saga. Splitting it down the center lengthwise and adding a piano hinge on the top. There is a brace inside that runs lengthwise which I assume would be on all of them. Folding in half plus reversing the hinges would definitely move it out of the way.

Removing your hinge pins might be an option. My cj6 didn't have a lid when I bought it. Purchased one from a member in the classified. With no hinge pins it just sat there. When I needed to access the box I just lifted the lid off and set it aside. I always thought about fixing it but never did. No rattles and it never moved.

I like ojgrsoi's idea, it's similar to my post (snapping in place) but quicker to modify.

I had my hinge pins out for no good reason, but it stayed that way for years. No big problems.

If you want, use some cotters or similar as removable pins.

I've been toying with the idea of making a 1/4 in plate lockbox to replace the toolbox on my 62 so I had a place for the wife to lock up her purse an my wallet etc when we go kayaking or to the beach . T.J.

Now that's a great idea. Keep us posted on progress.

Now that the seats are in, I'm thinking about going the hingeless route...
