The clip that holds the leaves in alignment in one of my rear springs has broken and fell off. They look to have been installed by crimping or over the end before the main leaf was curled at the end for connection to the shackles. Are there aftermarket clips for these springs, or should I even be concerned? Thanks....

Yes replacements are available, try a local spring shop or FLAPs. they may look a bit different than stock but they do the same job.

I've even seen some that had a rubber cushion and then were banded instead of a clamp, but it looked kind of cheesy, it did work though.

There are lots of sources for these clamps -
    spring clips - Google Search

It will be a little harder to find them in 1.75" width for the ECJ5 springs, but I expect you can find them if you look at a few sources.

The 1 3/4" spring clips are readily available on ebay. Most of them seem to be NOS military surplus for the M38a-1 and g503. You need to figure the length needed from the location on your springpack.

Thanks, guys. I wasn't sure where to look but now I know. Just want to let you know, tomorrow I will be going to the godawful DMV here in California to try and register my Jeep. Since it is over 39 years old, I qualify to register it as an antique automobile. I think this qualifies me for the old black and gold license plates. If they don't cost an arm and a leg, I am going to get them. If these plates in a vanity style don't cost too much more, I am going to get them that way. Wish me luck in getting this thing registered in the psychotic state of California. Later...

Or you can forget the clips and just use a few wraps of filament tape. Now before you say no way, Big Mark who had a 66 CJ5 V6 and was one of the hardest driving folks in the El Gabilan Four Wheelers club in CA. used filament tape all the time. Never was sure why he broke so many spring clips, but then he broke a lot of everythings. LOL WCP

I have a few friends that grew up in CA and I beleive there is a reason they arrn't there anymore. It isn't me that refers to the place as the land of fruits and nuts, they do.

Re your plates, you'll need to buy YOM plates, actual old plates, that are correct for your Jeep, then you can register the car with those plates. Pretty sure this is separate from registering an antique vehicle.

I don't know about Cal. but in Michigan if you use an Antique plate you can only drive to or from a show or event. If you get pulled over you can say you are going to a repair shop for repair work. I run regular plates, it cost more and you have to register every year, antique plates last 10 years, but I don't want to get pulled over for anything.

In Aridzona, they charge you double for Antique or Classic Car plates. I had them on my '60 for 5 years. When I went to renew this last time I got a good look at the charges. They charge you like $20 or $30 bucks a year for the plate, and then charge you the same exact amount if you want the plate to be for Antiques. I went back to standard plates. And you can get them for 5 years if the vehicle is old enough not to need emissions testing.

Oh, and try NAPA for the spring clips. They had them 5 years ago, and may still have them now.
