Replacing clutch questions

    I picked up a transmission jack from Harbor Freight and successfully dropped the transmission this morning by myself. As suggested in other threads, I lowered the entire unit including the bellhousing, transmission, transfer case, OD, and crossmember. The throwout bearing was completely toasted (sounds like a baby rattle) which explains the screeching noise when I pressed the clutch pedal. I am installing a LUK clutch kit from Rockauto. I had been experiencing a lot of oil dripping from the bellhousing after going up and down steep inclines which I though might be the rear main seal. But, upon inspection it appears I am leaking transmission oil through the front of the transmission. Is this a simple seal I should be replacing before I reinstall the transmission? In the photo, you can see the oil puddled in the adapter.

    Remove the adapter and the seal(s) will be obvious.

    So that HF transmission jack worked well? I might have to go pick one up.

    I don't know the particulars about your transmission, but you need to fix it before you put it back together.

    The transmission jack worked just fine. To balance the weight, the jack needs to be as far towards the back as possible, with the crossmember on the very front of the jack. You can sort of see this from the picture I posted.

    Thanks. I have been lowering the assembly down with an engine hoist and a floor jack underneath.

    Fix that seal and take some pics. Good Luck!

    I took off the oil seal retainer and installed a new gasket and oil seal. I just happened to have them from a gasket kit I bought years ago. That should solve my oil leak problem.

    Here is the LUK clutch installed on the flywheel. Do I need to worry about which way it is oriented on the flywheel?

    Wow that T/O bearing is wasted. I don't think i oriented my clutch cover when i put mine together.

    If the assembly was balanced there would be corresponding marks on both the clutch cover and flywheel.........

    Might want to clean up all of that oil in that area...............much easier to find the next leak when it started clean.

    What would the mark on the flywheel look like?

    Hard to say as some balance shops may use different marks...........Normally two ( 2 ) center punch marks on both half's ( pressure plate & Flywheel ) spaced a 1/4" apart +/- or sometimes double zero's ( 00 ) If the flywheel got ground they may be gone.............the marks when lined up oppose each other.
    Most folks unless they have a reason to believe the parts are mismatched would not have them balanced. An Original Buick V6 Odd fire would be externally balanced.........while a later 231 even fired motor may be internal or a combination of both.

    Which tranny jack are you saying you had success with? They Sell a few and I'm just trying to clarify which one

    I bought the cheapest HF transmission jack. I believe it is 450# weight limit.

    Might want to clean up all of that oil in that area...............much easier to find the next leak when it started clean.

    Definate plus for later troubles..no better time than now!!

    Looks like the HF scissor tranny jack. I had one for a while. It worked for about 3 R&Rs then started to fall apart on me.

    I ended up finding a nice hydro jack that I've used ever since.
