...in my 2G, the one under the accelerator pump. Does anyone know the best way to get it out? It appears the wrong ball was put in there and it's jammed really tight. I've tried compressed air, penetrating oil, and picking at it with a scribe. I also tried heat, but I'm not sure I got it hot enough. I was kinda worried about it being pot metal I guess. I'll put the carb body back in the Berryman's dip and let it soak overnight...

Can you take a very small drill bit and drill into the center of the ball and pull once the bit bites?

If it is a conventional ball bearing, I believe it will be hardened metal.

just went through this problem with a carburetor I got from a member . the carburetor must have filled with water once upon a time and dried out . every thing in it was filled with calcium and rust . every hole or well . anyway . back to ball . soaked carb in bucket of carburetor cleaner for 24 hrs . removed and rinsed . blew out with air . ball in pump well was covered over with calcium . dug around hole and around ball with the smallest scribe I had . tried using air in hole in fuel bowl opening . my rubber tipped blow gun was too large to fit and seal . so I got a small and fat O ring out and dropped in in opening , change tip to a 3" long 1/8" pipe . made good seal . blew air into hole . turned carb over and smacked in down a few times on my wooden work bench , repeated a few times and ball finely fell out .Took a dremel tool with wire brush and cleaned all bores . Had to buy some addition parts because of rust , here where I got my parts

I did the drilled hole trick on mine. Drilled to the ball and then poked it out. Filled the hole with plastic aluminum. It's worked for about 5 years.

Thanks for the replies. I'm guessing the ball is hardened, possibly stainless. Ron, my carb was in good shape overall, but the passage that the check ball seals was full of rusty deposits. All that loosened up and fell out after heating and tapping with a mallet handle. It definitely had water in it at some point. So I'm a little concerned that the seat may be corroded and the smaller ball in my kit may not seal. But first things first...gotta get this damn ball out. If all else fails, I'll go mortten's route. Thanks again everyone, I'll let you know what happens.

Whoever owned the Jeep before me put the big steel ball in there. Its plugged right at the opening, about half of it shows...I'll get it out one way or another. I have the smaller aluminum ball in my kit from Mike's.

I had to drill from the bottom of the carb to punch it out and patch the hole with epoxy.

Well, it's out. I drilled a hole from the outside right next to the ball and punched it out. Sure enough, it was the big steel ball. The small aluminum ball drops right in and falls back out as it should. The seat looks to be OK, as it is well below where the big ball was stuck. Now for some JB Weld...

JB Weld doesn't stand up to gasoline over an extended period.

Damn...I thought I was done. I used JB Waterweld or whatever it's called. It said it is for use on gas tanks....any experience with that?

I've used gas tank epoxy repair putty with good long term results. I've also repaired gas tanks with conventionl fiberglas and resin.

I got the carb back on today. I also put a new cap and rotor and 6 new plugs in. The Jeep runs better than it ever has! I doubt the accelerator pump ever worked properly and, at the end, it didn't work at all. So far, the JB Weld is holding up. When I did the rebuild, I lightly seated the mixture screws and them turned them out 2 turns. At that setting, fast-idling at operating temperature, the vacuum gauge in my dash reads 21" and steady. I don't even think I'm going to tinker with anything. I also learned I have #48 jets in my 2G FWIW. Thanks everyone!

I hate to admit it but I did the wrong ball in the wrong hole when I rebuilt my 2G. :-( Just so the next guy knows how to get it out, this worked for me. Make sure the venturi cluster is off so that the float bowl has a flat surface. Find a flat wooden board, place the bowl flat side down. Take your propane torch and heat up the area around the stuck ball (on the bottom side of the bowl). Then with a pair of welding gloves hold the bloat bowl flat side down and slam it down on the wood several times, with any luck the ball will fall out :) This worked for me!!

    Good-luck
