I seem to remember doing this exact same thing to my 304.

I'd think you'd need two reamers - one to straighten the bore to oversize, and a second to return the knurled bore to factory diameter.

"...slow one direction, slow the other, repeat..".

When I learned to lap valves it was on Model T Fords - but the rule was to reciprocate and not to rotate the valve more than a half turn or so. Intermittantly lift, reclock, and reset. They even had hand tools that would do the reciprocating motion as you turned a crank.

I LOVE this thread...all power to you. Caveman mechanics rule!

    You think it's worth saving?

The mods could move it to the ECJ5 forum or the builds forum, where it would not expire.

Pretty easy to make an oscillating motor from junk. Rotating disk, connecting rod, larger oscillating disk. Power it with your drill, and use an extra drill chuck to hold the valve.

like a power HACKSAW! I have wanted one of those for a while and do see them from time to time.

Its all back together. Proper torque settings in 3 passes and in the correct sequence. Thanks to the Buick guys for all the numbers and the sequence but for one thing. Autozone suppled the proper diagram for the intake sequence online. I kid you not. Cant buy a part from them worth having, but had the intake tightening sequence.

I bought that valve spring compressor for like a dollar thinking I would never use it, but for a buck, sure why not? The beam style torque wrench was with it for like 2 bucks. In the cart it goes. What I did notice is that my HF click torque wrench settings at the same numbers was MUCH higher than the beam style. At least 15%. I went with close to max torque numbers with the beam style and called it good.

This engine will run. It will burn oil cause the valve guides are bad. It will have ok compression. I may get some piston noise cause the pistons/wrist pins I put in are well used. It will be ok for a while, hopefully. The whole repair including the hone was around 120 bucks i think. could be a bit more.

It will probably run just like it did before those washers and nut(s) dropped in there.

    I love it!
I mean this in the the most endearing way... It's a patchwork engine in a patchwork jeep! It was meant to be, and will feel right at home.

Did you decide what you're doing with the exhaust?

if you guys think this mess is worth preserving for everyone to see, go for it.
I have not. I know the cj5 headers will work, but I really hate them. I have other things I have on my plate like swinging pedals and the tub. lots of stuff...
