I have been working more axle work lately and have decided that it is time for an axle stand instead of my usual jack stands to hold up the axle.

I had some scrap laying around. The arms are adjustable, they slide out to wherever you need them to be on the housing, and the pinion arm can be locked down with bolts to prevent it from moving, and the elevation can be adjusted. I need to trim the pinion mount tube because it is a little too tall. I will probably weld on something to allow me to clamp the housing down to the arms. The entire assembly can be clamped to the bench so i can torque the pinion down without having the axle twisting.

Nice work there. I bought an axle stand years ago that is free-standing and on wheels. Since it had a rotating bearing assembly on it, I removed the diff holder part and fabricated a jig onto the bearing plate to become one-half of a rotisserie, the other half was fabbed out of an old marine engine stand that was just overkill for any engine I'd ever build.

Dan, your timing is impeccable. I've been thinking about this lately as I may be trying to set up gears for the first time, in the sort of near future. I like what you've done with this. All I have now is a set of stands I made years ago that simply support and axle. Basically, 2 uprights with angle welded to the top.

I like the adjustability you've built into this. A way to very securely hold the housing in place is all that is missing but, it sounds like your working on that. It's been what I have been trying to figure out for a while so, I am anxious to see what you come up with.

I also thought about making something that would bolt into the holes for the cover bolts and would support the entire housing. More for work on cutting the Cs or knuckles off the ends, and resetting or customizing caster angles. Not that I'm likely to get into that type of work. Just my mind wandering.

that thing is nice. I have used jack stands and have had the axle roll off. that was annoying.

My Dad made a nice axle rack that bolts to the engine stand. My new front axle for the flatty is being built on it right now; I'll try to remember to get a pic tomorrow.
