Made at least some knowledge progress on the motor.

When GM went to one piece seal on the V8 they reduced the bolt circle and added a counterweight on the flexplate. On the 4 banger there was no counterweight to remove so they just reduced the bolt circle. Gotta' love GM in a lot of ways because the pilot diameter and bolt circle is the same from the V8 to the 3.0 with the one piece seal. But not all of the 6 bolts are evenly spaced on the V8, the two on either side of the dowel have a different spacing. I used an end mill to lengthen the two bolt holes so all 6 bolts thread into the crank. I drilled the counterweight spot welds and removed so now I have a 1 of 1 one piece rear seal 3.0 153 tooth internally balanced flexplate.

I was going to cut the sump off the pan and flip it around, but the way the oil pan rails are they are not parallel. It is much wider at the front half of the motor where the oil pump mounts. But I found a rear sump setup that came with a new pump and pickup. Next challenge is a dipstick of some sort. The front sump hole in the block won't work with the rear sump. I think I will cut apart an old big block chevy pan I have and weld the flange onto the new rear sump 3.0 pan which will be cheap and (fairly) easy.

    I'll just leave this here...
Gone Postal : Mail Jeep Build

It's a good read even if its not the direction you're headed... Maybe there is some ideas for parts in there for ya. Does any body remember the Postal that FourWheeler did in the 90's? I think it was Jimmy Nylund who built it..

The local used parts emporium has a Mercruiser sitting on a pallet. My buddy was gonna give it to me if I wanted it for my A1, but I figgered since the bell housing was the same I might as well put 2x the cubes in front of it... Cool build. If it turns out like your other Jeeps, it'll be awesome.

    PS I love your A1

Thanks! I had not seen that sight yet nor the GI style pic. Gone Postal is awesome and is on Pirate as well. Chad and I are Facebook friends now from the exchanges about Postals. I appreciate the link. Wish I had access to that "Gimme" Merc!

Project "Jeep For Cheap". At one point I found almost every article written on that one and photocopied and scanned it... But that was a couple work computers ago...

    World's slowest moving project...

Coached kid's Lacrosse team and remodeled the farmhouse this year is my excuse. :homer: But hope to make some progress this winter.

Ditched the GM ignition which used the MAP sensor for fuel flow and governed the motor to 2100 rpm or so. So I built an engine test stand to sort out the fuel/ignition setup. Have a 153 gas postal motor on it now that I bought before I got the LP motor and will test it first. Still need to fab a battery mount and fuel cell mount (bought a 1 gallon aluminum cell) and get ignition/start switch. But progress is progress!
