I have a 79 CJ-5 with the evaporator can.. The previous owner removed the original fuel tank and replaced it with a fuel cell. My question is can I remove this charcoal can, and if so will I need to replace the carburator. There is no return line from the charcoal can to the fuel cell.... Any help would be appreciated...

The vap can functions by removing fumes from the gas tank's vented air. It's all from the tank to the vap can, no return. These fumes are stored in the charcoal till they are drawn out by the engine vacuum and burned. If your fuel cell is vented to the atmoshere, there's no reason to keep the vap can. Plug the connections to the carburetor.

There's also a liquid check valve and roll-over shutoff under the rear fender, which you can remove.

You might leave it all in place if you are thinking about going back to the stock tank. There's no performance penalty for having it, it vents the tank properly, and requires minimal maintenance.

I recently noticed that my evaporator can isn't even connected to my gas tank. It looks as though the previous owner capped off the outlets on the tank and left the evaporator can unconnected. Is this something I should be worried about? My Jeep doesn't have any smog equipment. Only an Edelbrock carb on an Edelbrock manifold.
