I have taken off the starter, cleaned inside and made a test with a battery.

It turns but the wire from the battery is hot immediately.

    It is a Ducellier 12V 3A.

When I reinstalled it on the engine, all contact well cleaned, again it has lack of power to make the engine turn, but it doesn't stop, it starts.

Is it because this starter is not enough powerful or is it a 'tired' starter?

I would take it to a good automotive electric shop and have them go through the whole thing. The wire shouldn't get hot immediately under any circumstances.

Probably better to buy a new one - but the fact is that the engine always start!

You may have a bad field winding. I really have no idea what the cost for a rebuild on one of those is but you might want to consider another option- try a search here on "toyota starter".

The cost of a rebuild will be high if I consider the price per hour. I'll look for the toyota starter but I don't know which one it is.
My starter has probably been already rebuild but not well, I suppse that there is some resistance somewhere in the circuit, but it works.
I'll try to get more info.
I repaired some in the past and I remember that it was working faster on the test. Mine works, but the minimum. And there is nothing wrong inside, I cleaned all carefully. But I cannot check all inside I am not enough clever with electricity, ohm mesure, etc...

    Thanks for your help.

Are you sure your battery is okay and giving full voltage, under heavy load? Have you tested the starter with a different battery?

Fwiw my original starter wires would get hot, and sometimes would work... Sometimes would smoke.. Lol

I got it rebuilt for $125 and it works great and looks brand new

The Toyota thing didn't work for me..

Yes, I checked and tested. That was my first check!

I am checking the Toyota solution (not yet result) but I also check the rebuild solution. The reason for a rebuild is not obvious, there is nothing broken evidently.
Maybe it has been rebuid and with bad welding, it was not very beautifully welded inside.
Maybe the varnish on the copper wire making the magnetic field is not in good condition...

Anyway, I'll ask for a rebuid and look for a brother of this french starter.
    Maybe it is a solution.
But mine always start, what is positive until today. Thanks for this info.
