I hope these aren't dumb questions.

when swapping a 231 into the jeep, is there any difference beween a odd fire or even fire as far a compatibility?
Will the even fire bolt right in?
will the odd fire bolt right in?
clutch and fly wheels, starters.....any concerns. whats better? whats worst?

I should have mentioned that Sunday I am picking up a 231 V6 to transplant in my Jeep. It is out of a 1979 Manza. I am not sure if it is even or odd fire. Judging by the year I am assuming it is an even fire. I was told that a odd fire will bolt right in but I wasn't sure about the even. Has anyone out there used/ or currently using an even fire 231 V6? My wife isn't as thrilled about me buying another engine to put in the Jeep. I just need this to go smoothly. Any imput and advice would be greatly appreciated.

The biggest difference between the even-fire and oddfire is engine internals, harmonic balancer, and flywheel balance differences as far as installation goes. You need the flywheel for the 231 or will have to have the 225 flywheel balanced to match the 231 balance. Depending on year/model the motor came from you may need a new clutch assembly also. Throttle hook up is different and the distributor is electronic, although the '79 is non computer so just one wire hookup from switched ignition is all that's necessary. Some wiring differences with the alternator. Should be a 10 si internally regulated unit. See the other posts on alternator wiring. This is the one many other people are switching to. '79 is an even fire.
Bellhousing bolt pattern and engine mount patterns are the same.

I was also recently curious about a 225 to 231 swap(just curious at this point). So you say the bellhousing and motor mounts have the same pattern? How about the intake and exhaust manifolds, are they the same pattern also?

I swaped my 225 out for a 1982, 231 none turbo, even fire in my 71 CJ. All I had to do was get the 75 lb fly wheel from my 225 rebalanced do to the 225 being externally balanced as apposed to the 231 being internally balanced. The 231 used the same motor mounts and bolted to my 225 bell houseing.

After I swaped my 225 for a 231 I installed an Edlebrock four barrel intake with 500 cfm Edlebrock carb. I went with an HEI distributer, outside frame Hooker headers, and a set of 2" Flowmaster mufflers. I handled the cooling with an aluminum flex fan and a pusher electric fan in front of the radiator. I used a new starter for a 231. I used the original radiator and alternater. It runs great.
