My jeep just started pouring oil out were the 258 and the T176 tranny come together. I was told it was probably the rear main seal. I was wanting to know how big of a job it is to change the rear main seal. Any information would be great. thanks

I'm not so sure if the 6 is a two piece seal but in my 304 I just pulled the oil pan, took off the back bearing cap, and removed the seal. It was really easy to install the new seal. The only problem I ran into was getting the oil pan to seal up. Go really easy on the bolts until the RTV is pretty dry, then crank them down to spec. Mine has been good to go for about two years now.

    Good luck.

Thanks guys, it turned out to be a pretty easy job. The only problem I had was there was one bolt on the oil pan that is right by the motor mount. I had to hoist my engine up and take the motor mount bracket off before I could get to the bolt. There is always one. In all it was a pretty easy install. Thanks for your help.

I'm glad to hear it went well. Mine was pretty easy too. I paid to have it done the first time and he messed it up. I wish I would have attempted it so I could have saved the $$$ but I was really busy at work and didn't have the time to mess with it. As it turned out he had the Jeep so long "fixing it" that I ended up having the time and should have just done the work myself the first time. When the guy gave the Jeep back to me and said it was "fixed" I found it still leaked oil and he swapped my carb with an old one. I didn't find any of this out until I moved to Louisiana. It's a long story...anyway, good luck and hope it solved your problems.
