   I've never been inclined to use a bumperette as a step- the spare, gas can and tail lights all get in the way.
   
   Also the MB had a dedicated support part for helping secure the spare; the bumperette was not used that way.

   Interesting. Mine is a M38A1-C, gas can and spare wheel were side mounted to give rear access for the 106mm.
