Hello all, I am just into the wiring of my build. I have great schematic for the wiring but no legend. It is from the 74 TSM but numbers from the schematic are not listed on the legend. \I do not have a fuse panel and only seem to find schematics with fuse panels. Can somebody help me please.
    Thanks in advance.

There is a complete TSM for 1974 here http://oljeep.com/edge_74_tsm.html This includes the legend for wiring colors. Follow up if you have difficulty understanding the diagram.

1975 was the first year for a fuse panel in a CJ. All previous years have only a few inline fuses in the harness.

Hey, yes thanks, that is the diagram that I have but the legend is missing some of the wires for example A29 is not on there, there are a few more too. Did you come across this.

Sorry, that's all there is. The diagram in the TSM for your year is the best and most specific diagram available.

Don't make me search through the diagram to find the wires in question. Please specify where they are in the diagram and what they connect to.

You should be able to determine the color from the Jeep itself. Trace the wires from the devices and connectors. Do you have a test light and/or multimeter, and know how to use them? Tracing wires is not difficult if you are systematic and patient.

Hey thanks, that's all I need to know. As long as it is the best one. Did not mean for you to trace the wires back. My dash wiring is a complete mess. I was looking into it yesterday and was a bit frustrated. I just thought that since some of the wire codes were on the schematic that they should have been on the legend and that is why I thought I might not have the legend matching the schematic.

Follow the wire or wires in question on the schematic they often hook to another wire that is in the legend.

I understand your frustration, but the CJ diagram is very simple compared to modern cars. Part of your frustration is because of the mess that the PO made, and IMO part of it is because you are trying to take the whole harness in at once. I suggest you go through it one wire at a time, and straighten it out. It will look less tangled once you gain familiarity with the circuits.

From the factory, it was bundled with black tape, and likely the PO has unbundled it to make changes. It may help to make a big blowup of the diagram on paper, and trace it through with colored pencils. This is what I did back in the days when libraries and copiers were available but before the internet.

Hey Walt just wanted to give you an update. After many hours and lots of patients, I have traced back the wires and figured it all out. The only thing that I do not know is there is a vacuum solenoid switch that I have a connector going to (orange and black wires). I do not remember disconnecting this. I originally had a 258 (original to the 74 CJ5, but now have put in a 98 TJ 4.0 fuel injected. Do I need this as I cannot find a vacuum solenoid switch. Aside from that all should be good. I ordered a bunch of connectors and the crimp tool for the Packard style connectors and it should be done soon.
I could not get the oil pressure gauge to work so I just went mechanical. I had one from my previous build. They are more accurate and reliable in my opinion.
Cheers and thanks for the help all.

I believe the only electric vacuum solenoid switch on a 74 is part of the Transmission Controlled Spark (TCS) system. No idea what the wire colors are off hand but if the connector is part of a smaller harness and the other end goes down into the transmission, it's likely TCS. Not sure where you are with repairing your harness but if I could offer one piece of advice, if you need to replace a wire, replace it with the same color/tracer so that the wiring diagrams are still accurate when you go back to it. Believe me you will never remember what's what otherwise and it will save you tons of aggravation and time. Also if you sell the new owner will love you.
