I installed my rebuilt transmission/transfer case and fill it with oil. I am getting a very small drip from the lowest bolt that joins the transfer case to the transmission. Apparently this bolt goes all the way thru the transfer case flange then thru the transmission case into the oil. Any easy fix? For now I removed the bolt and quickly stuck another bolt in thee hole so I wouldn't loose the oil. I cleaned the original bolt and wrapped it with teflon tape 4 or 5 turns. Replaced the plug with the wrapped bolt and it seems to have sealed. What's the normal way to seal this bolt.

I would use some permatex or RTV on the threads when I was assembling it. Looks like you solved the issue though.

We'll see in the morning. This is T90/T18. I suppose if this doesn't fix the seep, next plan is drain the oil, carefully clean the bore with brake clean, then re install with permatex. Can you still get the old non silicone black permatex?

Yes, you can still get Permatex, I like the brush on Aviation Permatex . I had a similar problem, on the other end, at the bell housing. it turned out to be the cluster gear shaft leaked a little every day. It took me three times to find it, I finally set it the sun and watched it, and a little trickle ran down from the shaft, I did what you said, cleaned it with brake clean and applied a little silicon on the end of the shaft, problem solved.

I was warned about that and when I installed the transmission I cleaned that area with breke clean and coated it with super grey. Hopefully that works.

This morning there was no oil seeping out so I guess the teflon tape did the trick. We'll see when it warms up.
On line I found "Permatex High Temperature Thread Sealer". This is not a thread locker. If the teflon tape starts leaking I will try that.

I am glad I read this post. I am getting ready to put my D-18 and T-98 back together, and I know all too well about that bolt you mention. I had a helluva time getting it out. Maybe I will put a copper washer under the head and make sure that area is super clean. Sounds like I need to coat the threads, too. Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks...

I bought some of the Permatex high temp thread sealer today. I ran the jeep around for maybe 20 miles abd when I came back, no seepage. If it starts to seep I will use the permatex as that is what is intended for. Copper washer will not perform as a lock washer. Good Luck.
