I bought this CJ5 Monday with a build date of September 1970. There is lime green paint under the previous paint job(s). It's under the dash and tool box lid and inside the blower housing. I have removed the po's homemade hard top half-cab. Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

Your lime green was a factory Renegade color. See if your frame has gussets. You likely have a Renegade!

I agree-it's got the right rear reflctor, the dash gauges in the right place, and that bracket on the back is for a Renegade tire carrier.

Where on the frame would the gussets be located?

Sept. 1970 would make your Jeep a 1971 model year. The switch over in model years produced some 1971 model year Renegade I's that we've seen, along with Renegade II's for the rest of the model year.

The frame reinfrocements mentioned include the piece pictured below - across the frame channel above the spring hanger.

I'll look when we get back from softball. I noticed the frame is boxed from the rear front spring hanger forward. And that's different from the CJ3B's Ive had.

So is it the opinion of the forum that I have stumbled into a Renegade I? And if so I guess a power steering conversion and cutting the rear fender well to make more room are a no no. What is this thing worth if I wanted to sell or trade for a guilt free CJ5 with a 225 V-6? I may not be worthy. Probably not. Help please. I'm not into concourse restorations but I do respect rare automotive oddities. Lol

Did all of the 225's have a skid plate or is that a Renegade option?

Standard on the Renegades. From what I remember, the engine oil pan + skidplate wasn't an option for non-Renegades, but was available as a part at the part's counter.

    Rootpass,

Your Jeep is missing several of the Renegade specific pieces and it would take some part's searching to get all the correct parts back on it unless you have a part's stash not shown in your pictures. Things I can see from your picture that are missing or incorrect:

Swing away spare tire carrier (you have a bracket, do your have the rest)
    Dash gauges are incorrect
    Wire harness is incorrect
    Missing dash pad
Incorrect wheels, should be Kelsey Hayes 15X8 or alluminum D-slots
    Missing passenger and rear seat

There may be other pieces, but we can't tell from the pictures provided.

There are also items standard for 1971 that would need to be replaced for a true restoration.

It's your Jeep so you have to decide what to do. You may be able to find someone interested in buying it for a restoration and you could use the money to buy a different one to modify.

Thank you Zoomer. That is the direction I was looking for. I am missing all of those things you mentioned. That being said my mind set as of now is to fix up / restore this Jeep the way (color) I like while leaving clues or proof to the next owner of its Renegade heritage. I will not make any modifications that cannot be undone (ie. bolt on) or what ever. Always being mindful of the Jeeps past. Ya'll don't get too upset if you see if painted Lusterless Desert Sand please. Lol. I would like for someone who purchases it in the future to be able to prove it is a RenI. Is that cool?

If that's the path you choose, some of the items that "bolt on" are specific or fairly specific to the Renegade. An example of this is the leaf spring packs are different leaf count than standard 1971 CJ5. You may want to save some of these items if you change them out (or sell them to us Renegade fans here ;) )

I like the Lime Green, and I would restore this to original color. A '71 should be a Ren II, but I think this is a Ren 1 because of the tailgate. You could put the stripes back (they are available) and keep most of the Ren II character.

JMO - that a Jeep is a former Renegade is not much of a selling/bragging point really. The Renegade is interesting because of its historical place in the Jeep line, and the bright colors and stripes. Jeep offered some "performance extras" with the package that you could not otherwise get from the factory. By 1974, the Renegade was pretty much an appearance package, and you could get everything in the package except the paint and wheels from the regular options list. So there are features about your chassis that identify it as a Renegade, though for most buyers that plus a dollar will get you a cup of coffee.

So IMO - it's the appearance that adds value. Those extra features only validate the originality of the appearance, and don't add much on their own. Up to you - it's your Jeep to do as you like with - but if I cared about the Renegade-ness, I would preserve the appearance. Well executed power steering won't affect that, but the wrong color will.

    Some history - http://web.archive.org/web/20070104221906/http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/general/Renegade/index.shtml

Rootpass, I have a Mint Green 71 Renegade II serial # 8305017 367274, built 12 units after yours. Early 71 Rene's II seemed to have used left over 70 parts including tubs. Units built in September were considered the next years model. All 71 Jeeps had the tank in the rear to meet federal laws.
