Hi - I suggest you get a 9V battery and fire up that digital multimeter. Borrow one from a smoke detector, if you have any. With the analog meter, set to Ohms X 1K, you multiply the reading by 1000 to get 2000 ohms, or 2K ohms, so each tick between 2 and 1 is 200 ohms. When you touch the leads together it should read zero. Whatever you get, that meter is not sensitive enough to tell you the difference between 10 and 20 ohms.

The gauge won't work in situ unless the sender shell is grounded to the block, so suspending the sender in mid air and heating it won't do it. A big clip lead to the block and a cup of hot water should show you a difference - as would the lighter, but the hot water is safer.

Ha...My 9 volt was fine, the terminal was crusty from sitting. I cleaned it up and used the digital meter and tested both the old sender and the TS4. You're right, the digital is WAY better. Both senders are good. My temp gauge must be shot. How do I fix the stock temp gauge?

Does this help? http://home.comcast.net/~sday77/binky/repair_gauges.htm Pretty sure it's the same for '71. Your fuel gauge works, so that means the CVR must work. Use your meter on the test points for the temp gauge. If the gauge is kaput, there's no option but to replace it.

Performed a COMPLETE speedometer overhaul. Thanks for the link Tim, I tested everything as the instructions indicated and it all checks out.

I disassembled every bit of the speedo including removing the face of the temp gauge. I discovered a very fragile broken wire inside. I was able to repair the wire and now having a operating temp gauge. I did Tim's suggestion of momentarily touching a lead to the block and the temp gauge moved...YES!

The only issue now is the sender seems to be bad despite the positive testing results I got the other day. I couldn't find the right size sender or adapter to fit the manifold. Maybe there is another location on the manifold for the TS4?

How do you know the sender is bad? Because the gauge never moves off cold? Do you have a thermostat in the engine?

A bushing to use the smaller sender is a common hardware store item. Look in the brass fittings department.

I'm assuming the sender is bad because it never moved from cold. Maybe I need to go for a longer drive?

    Yes there's a thermostat. I don't know which one.

I looked all over the brass section last week and the threads weren't right. I need to go to a store with more options than Lowes.

I've been doing almost everything this site suggests - http://www.civilianjeep.info/Strenk/Gauge%20web%20page/basic_troubleshooting_for_cj_gau.htm

    Temp. gauge calibration:
    C (cold)........................ 130 degrees--73 ohms
Beginning of band.......... 171 degrees--36 ohms
Top of band.................. 242 degrees--13 ohms
    H (hot).......................... 270 degrees---9 ohms

I started with 60 ohms because I'm stupid and had the sender wire connected at first. The ohms jumped all over the place (almost went and bought a new DVM...lol). My engine has been running for a good 10 - 15 minutes and the current ohm reading is 48.

There is still no needle movement unless I touch the sender to the block (just to verify my repair is holding). There must just be a huge threshold on the gauge reading?

You savvy enough to substitute a resistor for the sender? A 10 or 15 ohm resistor from the wire to ground should make your gauge move to the hot side and stay there. Don't be tempted to ground the wire directly to the engine for more than a very brief contact - you don't want to burn out the gauge.

Radio Shack used to sell bags of resistors for a couple bucks - but they are going bankrupt and local stores may be closed or have very little stock. There may be an electronics store near you - they will have 1/4 watt carbon film resistors for maybe 25c each.

10c each at Mouser - but you'd need to pay shipping. http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?FS=TRUE&N=4294759688+12549310+1323043

    Yeah.

But I'm going to try another idea first. I went to go get a new battery for my infrared thermometer and decided to go hit the parts store and buy the TS4 (again). I also asked for the TS6 I bought last week and fit in the manifold. They only had the TS4 and said they could have the TS6 here by tomorrow. I told him I only needed the TS6 to match threads so I could search for an adapter. He said they sell adapters  why didn't the other guy tell me that last week when I was there and specifically asked if they had adapters?! Plus last week when I returned the TS6 in exchange for the TS4 the same guy said they were the same price. Today the TS4 was $4 less...He's a complete liar. I'm considering calling the manager and letting him know. It's disappointing because they've had almost everything I've needed in stock.

As soon as the Jeep cools down I'm going to install the TS4 and I'll be back with results.

    Thanks for the extra links.

Well, I think I'm going to move on to something else. The sensor tests perfect at the ohm readings but the gauge still isn't responding.

FYI I usually buy my brass adapters at either oreillys home depot or ace. it should be a simple piece to get ahold of. I have bought many over the years for different projects.

have you checked the sender wire to see if the wire is broken internally? also those wiring connectors don't look like originals to me, are you sure the were crimped on correctly? ive had to fix my grandpas work before where he didn't connect wire connectors properly and they made no or a poor connection to the wires.

While at Lowes I couldn't find an adapter that allowed the TS4 to seat deep into the adapter. Turns out the one I bought from the parts store doesn't seat any deeper. Oh well...Time wasted, project delayed? Yes.

    Yes.
