Hope to buy this CJ5 :p

A guy is selling this 1975 CJ5 localy. He is asking for 500, no title, no gas tank, no front axel shafts, the windshield is broken, and the tires are dry rotted and will only hold air for a little bit. I am told that the engine runs and the transmission works. I have not gotten a chance to take a look at it in person yet, but hope to this weekend.

Two friends and I are hoping to use it as a trail queen or maybe even get it registed if we can get a title for it. The idea of rolling around town with no top and doors in the spring is quite appealing.

I know its hard to give much feedback when I havent even seen the rig in person, but just wondering what everyone thinks. What do you guys think about the price? The fact that it does not have a title makes it much more anoying, but I think this would be so much fun. Does anyone know of any major issue I might run into with hoking up a new gas tank? And lastly, would i even be able to roll the CJ onto a trailer w.o front axel shafts?

    Thanks!

What state are you in? If the rest of the body is like the windshield, $500 seems too high. IMO it's always cheaper to pay more for a vehicle in good condition than to buy a parts car, intending to fix it up.

Just as an example, one of the members here (Kodiak12060) was selling a similar rusty Jeep with a hardtop and title, as I recall. Not sure if he sold it, but he advertised it and it was available for several weeks. Downstate NY, $200.

    BTW welcome from Boston!

IMHO $500 is too high for that.

$250 tops, and I'd begin haggling by offering to move it off his property for free...

I agree that the $500 seems a little much, I hope you are ready for some serious jeep time, because that thing is screaming "Project"

I have to agree with everyone else. $500 is alot of cabbage for that jeep. Good luck with the negotiations!

When You Say Trail Queen Do You Mean Ditch Windshield For A Roll Cage And Shaving Fenders Because If It Ran And You Were Planning On Chopping Then Id Pay 250$. But I Agree It Does Look Like Fun.

Well the trail queen idea is that it wouldnt be used for daily driving nor would I have to depend on it as transportation. It would just be used as a toy to wheel around. Best case is that I would be able to title it. In VA any car older then 25 years can be registred as a antique and would need no safety or emissions inspection, this would allow us to at least drive it to the trail and not have to tow it. It would also let us drive around under the sun acasionlay.

Thanks everyone for you comments on the price, I was thinking somewhere around 200-250 also, especialy because we have to trailer it out of there, replace at min the gas tank and front shafts and the fact that there is no title :-/

If you're in VA, then there are plenty of cheap jeeps around. We're in Roanoke. Yes, getting titles for vehicles without and antique tags is super easy here.

We have several jeeps and could probably piece together something for you or find you something.

    Where are you?

I'm always looking for a project but that looks like it's more than I'd be willing to take on, especially for $500. I recently bought an old Bronco for $300 with title and street legal. Lots of rust but plan on cutting it up and beating the heck out of it with a friend of mine. I'd keep looking if I were you.

I agree with everyone that 500 is too much.......
Let me ad an opinion... Even if it is an un-titled trail/ beater rig, it should be reliable, too. Having something that leaves you miles from home, and breaks down just when your having fun is really a downer. Besides, you'll take more pride in something nicer and more reliable. Just my .02, YMMV, FWIW, etc..........

Don't jump at this heap for $500 just because one you looked at before got away. I know the feeling... resist it!
Stick around here, the folks here can and will help you find a decent rig for whatever amount you have to spend.
Also, watch ebay, if you find something that looks right, ask for opinions, we'll all try to steer you right.

I'm afaraid you won't have much fun with the rig you pictured. It will take all of your money, and probably crap out on you every time you want to have some fun.

    Good luck!

i agree watch ebay and post here in the wanted section. I just saw a complete cj5 in North Carolina with alot of new stuff on it and was relatively rust free, Sold for around 1100 I think. I wish I was on the East coast sometimes that is where all the Jeeps are

Well, it might be worth $500.00 in parts. Those factory original rear lights and rear backup lights might score you several hundred alone. Heck, I'd give you $200.00 for 'em.

Otherwise, value is in the eyes of the buyer!

I have recently finished a restore on a 1975 CJ-5 and if I were to do it again I would go with a 76 simply on the ease of searching for parts.

Unless your set up with all the gear thats a huge do up job, I'd look for something better.
