Cooling system

    Is it neccasery to have the heater core as part of the cooling system? Or can you just omit the heater core all together?

    I have not ran a heater core on my CJ 3B with 225 V-6 for 35 years and have never had any issues.
    A heater core can provide an additional means to expell heat from the motor when ever it is in use and certianly can add to the comfort of cold weather driving. The motor shouldnt need it if the cooling system (radiator/fan/shroud, water pump, clean passages in block, functional/proper thermostat,etc.) is operating properly.Oz

    My '60 CJ5 came without a heater.

    Of course, here in Central Arizona, a heater really is not necessary. And in an open vehicle, useless anyway. You just dress warmer, that's all.

    When I don't have a heater I run a hose between the 2 ports where the heater hoses would connect normally to help prevent any dead heading which can lead to buildup and corrosion.

    Thanks for your response guys, I didn't think I needed it so I omitted it and ran a hose like Glenn had mentioned he had his. However, every now and then, the engine seems to want to run a little hotter at times with no rhym or reason. It should be noted though that I do not have a fan shroud.
    This will be my next purchase.

    Ya lost me on this one, Glenn.

    Mine came from the factory with out. Just plugs, no nipples or nothing.

    Remeber, any thing not needed by the driver was an option. That included seats, windshield wipers, heaters and anything else not needed to make it move and stop.

    Although, I believe the spare wheel and tire and jack was included. Try finding one in a car now. Spare tires are options. And then they are not what I would call real tires.

    If a plug is in there then it's no big deal, but something like a hose fitting that was capped could be deep enough to capture sediment and cause it to build up over time and cause corrosion in that area because of no continuous flow. We all know that corrosion tends to build up in cooling systems even though there is direct flow sometimes.
