So I was able to pick up a new Ected e-locker for a Dana 44 30 spline, 3.73 and down, for $450. I guy in the local club bought it new, never installed it, and wanted to sell it. I couldn't pass it up at that price. See the Quadratec page for more info.

So my question is, is it advisable to upgrade to after market axles also (I think Alloy USA a.k.a. Omix) makes one. I have never touched the rear so probably need to address new bearings etc. while someone is in there installing the locker for me.

What tire size? What's the intended use? If the stock axles are worn then it would be a good time to upgrade or plan on doing gnarly trails, or you have a real heavy throttle foot. Otherwise I would spend the money elsewhere. The stock axles hold up quite well. I have seen some broken, with worn or twisted splines, etc. but that is not all that common.

I have 33's now and don't ever expect to go bigger. Most wheeling is fairly mild, although I do occasionally like a challenge, but I don't beat on it. Based on what you said Nick I think I'll be okay, I can control my right foot most of the time. I'll be sure to inspect the axles closely for wear or twists before re-using. While they're out I'll get new bearings and races for them.

I have a stock dana 44 from a scout, lincoln locker on it, with 3.73 gear and 36 inch tsl, lot a abuse in three year, never had any issue. The front is another story. Just put the locker there, put some news bearing on it and forget it :)
