1973 CJ-5: WHY is it it so friggin hard to find a picture or diagram of the fresh air and defrosting system? I bought the service manual, it was a terrible help. Is Chiltons or Haynes any better?

    1) Where does the fresh air box drain go? The PO chopped off the drain (why I'll never understand) and patched it, so any rain coming in has no where to go, so I need to figure out how to recreate a drain some how and I guess just dive it out the firewall at some convenient plug.

    2) Does it matter which hole the defroster splitter connects to at the end of the duct coming from the heater core? I'm guessing not.

    Can somebody post some pictures?

    Thanks - Mitch

No pics, but I'll try to explain how my '74 plumbing works, should be the same.

    1. The fresh air box drain is from the bottom of the fresh air box to a hole that is about 1 1/2" in diameter that should be visible just below your heater/air plenum, about 20-24" down from the bottom of the fresh air box and then into the firewall. If I remember it is slightly offset to the right of where the air box drain is so the hose doesn't necessarily go straight down. It exits under the battery tray.

    2. No it doesn't matter. I plugged one hole and used another to connect to my aftermarket plastic defrost vent.

    I hope this helps.

'73 is the same as '74.

For pictures like this, refer to the parts book. The manual is for repair, and assumes you've got the assembled Jeep in front of you. Don't waste money on the Chaynes manuals - the TSM is light years ahead of them. Buy a parts book if you need more pictures.

The parts book shows it connecting to the right-hand hole. Cap or tape-over the other hole. If you have the correct drain hose, installation should be obvious. There is only one hole in the floor that fits the hose.

MTS has a lot of the parts for the heater - http://www.mtscompany.com/airbox.htm

Much appreciated, thanks. I found the parts book online too, that will help some!
