Maybe this has already been covered, but I am new at this so here is my question. I have a 1971 cj5 v6 with a single shift dana 18 transfercase. I am going to convert it to dual shift. I am told that as it currently is, it can only go into low range when the front axle is engaged. I have heard there is some type of catch or something that can be removed so the rear axle can be shifted into low range independant of the front axle. Is this true and if so how do I do it?

There is an "interlock pill" that rides between the shifter rods inside the front cap. You will understand when you have a T-case apart. Some guys leave the pill out, but the down side is it puts alot of stress & strain on the drive train to drive it in rear wheel low. One mistake and you will shred some axle parts quickly.

You can accomplish the same thing by shifting the T-case into 4 low and NOT Locking the front hubs.

I have a '71, and converted the single stick to twin sticks. You need the front output, shift rails, etc from an earlier D18. Once you have it and do the install, you remove the shift interlock pill to allow low range on the rear axle only.

Do a search on twin stick, there's lots here.

There might be some "kits" available, try www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com
    and www.r-p4wd.com
In each case it would be best to call and discuss your needs on the phone.

I occasionally sell kits ready to go for exactly that. Many parts are brand new and those that can't be purchased new are reconditioned. They also include the gasket and seal kit needed. Cost is $65 plus shipping and gets you everything you need. I've sold kits to several members here and they can attest to the quality. I think I have enough parts to put another kit together. If interested PM me with your info and I'll get a shipping cost. This cost is just to those people on this board. I could easily get around $100 for the same kit elsewhere but prefer to keep it on this board. Kinda my way of supporting the people here but still making a few bucks to support my Jeep habit :D Nickmil.
