Yep, you could even go to Walmart or wherever and buy a bunch of oil filters for various applications, and return the ones that do not fit. Your FLAPS should also be willing to help with this. Try the Wix number or its cross, and take it back if it does not fit. If the Wix does not fit, try an AC PF11 (GM type) or a PF2 (Ford type).

You have to be careful with that- for a bypass filter you need a flow restricter some wheres in the setup, either in the base or the filter itself. There are posts here detailing issues people have had with their oil pressure dropping too low after adding a spin on filter setup. It's been my understanding that on the stock Jeep spin on that the filter itself provides the restriction.

Wix 51050 is what's recommended at wixs site for a 1970 jeep 4 cylinder oil filter.

That is probably true, I had to move my filter from the original spot on the block to the firewall down low by the steering shaft to shorten the lines to the oil pump.

Howard you are right again, the motor I am painting has a stock spin on with a Wix filter and the outer ring has only two real small holes in it. It must restrict the oil flow going into the filter so it does cause a drop in oil pressure. Rick

Apparently I'm wrong again- I thought the restriction was in the filter, from what you're seeing it's the mount that has it.

Just out of curiosity, can you measure the size of the holes? I know the canister filter has one .050", I'm wondering if the ones in the spin on mount + the same area.

Just to wrap this one up. I took all the part numbers you guys provided me with into Lordco, and the guy handed me a Fram pb50 and was positive it would fit. Sure enough we're all good!
Thank you all for your help!
Love the tip about putting a hole in the top before changing it!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hi Howard, I have been at my cabin for two weeks, and just got home. I checked the oil filter and the two holes are 1/8". I put a number 30 drill in them and it was tight, I tried a 1/8" and it fit. I can send you a picture if you want one. I would be nervous about going to the auto parts store and finding one that just screws on, it may not restrict the oil enough to keep the oil pressure at the right level. Rick

Thanks for the update Rick :)

2 x 1/8" is bigger than I would have thought, the Fram canister setup uses a single .050 outlet hole-

Even with that there's a pile of oil going through it (see my earlier posting above)

Well, as long as your pressure is up there I guess you can't argue with success :)

Use a Wix 51050 or a NAPA 1050. Fram filters are junk.

Howard when I get a chance I will cut the oil filter apart and see if it has any kind of restrictor inside it. I agree with you, two 1/8" holes equal 1/4", and that is larger than the oil line. Rick

Actually not. If you visualize it, you could easily put four 1/8" circles inside a 1/4" circle, and you'd still have unfilled space.

A 1/8" hole has an area of 0.01227 sq. inch. Two would make 0.02454 sq. inch.

A 1/4" hole has an area of 0.04909 sq. inch.

Thus two 1/8" holes together are still less than half the area of a 1/4" bore.

    Agreed.

But it's still way more than 1-.050 hole which has an area of (3.14 * (.050/2)2) = .002"2

Thanks for all the conversation, the motor I am working on is just garage art. I am going to put it all together all stock anyway. It is the motor I took out of my 64TP, when I replaced it with a nos military short block I found still in the box from 1952. I am painting it and putting on a rolling test stand complete with radiator and muffler so I can run it just to hear it run. Just in case some of you run into one of the NOS motors make sure you pull the rear main cap and inspect the rear main seal. I had to pull the crank out and have it polished in the rear seal area, the seal had etched the seal surface like electrolysis and it would have leaked. Thanks Rick
